What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe position at Joseph Eye & Laser Center?
Performs a variety of duties involving basic vision testing. Assists the physician in the examination and treatment of patients by performing routine vision tests. Assists the physician with routine clinical/diagnostic procedures and other related duties.
Responsibilities
- Greets patients in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner and escorts patients into examination rooms. Works with all ages of patients including geriatric patients.
- Obtains specific ophthalmic and medical patient history in accordance with established guidelines of Eye Services Department. Reviews patient’s charts and documents various ophthalmic tests and examination results.
- Explains tests and procedures to patients following standard procedures. Ensures patient awareness and understanding through verbal and written consent from patient.
- Performs a variety of basic vision and diagnostic tests following standard procedures such as visual acuity, measuring patient’s glasses prescription, auto refraction on patient’s eyes, assess and document patient’s pupils, motility, confrontation visual field and angles, check intraocular pressure in eyes, and dilates patient’s eyes.
- Performs additional tests such as glare testing, potential acuity meter (Pam), color testing, Amsler Grid instructions and testing, , stereo testing, corneal pachymetry, utilizes a manual lensometer, auto-refraction etc., following standard procedures.
- Performs routine cleaning of ophthalmic equipment in accordance with department standards. Utilizes safety rules and assesses site for compliance of DPH regulations—informs manager of outstanding violations. Demonstrates proper sterile techniques including latex-free procedures in accordance with Eye Services department standards.
- Prepares examination rooms following standard procedures. Opens and closes assigned rooms, stocks medication, checks mediation expiration dates, stocks forms and other supplies as required.
- Distributes message to providers or others for appropriate action.
- Maintains a variety of logs such as oxygen, refrigerator temperatures, etc. Notifies supervisors or others of any discrepancies.
- Instructs patients on proper usage of contact lenses. Ensures patient understanding by self-demonstration.
- Complies with health and safety requirements and with regulatory agencies such as DPH, etc.
- Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, seminars, etc.
- Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
- Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
- Regular, reliable and predicable attendance is required.Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Required to successfully complete JCAHPO certified home study course within three months of hire.
- General computer skills or knowledge.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of various software applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, etc.
