Position Summary
A strategic leader responsible for overseeing self-performed work within Journey Construction. This role involves providing leadership and utilizing experience to develop and grow the self-performed units of carpentry, steel, and general requirements within Journey Construction.
This position will direct and manage all aspects of the self-performed business units, focusing on profitability and meeting monthly financial obligations, staffing levels, and field operations. Additionally, this position will lead and motivate a team of managers and workers in daily operations concerning safety, quality, scheduling, and cost control.
Responsibilities of this position include facilitating communication, promoting collaboration, resolving problems, fostering team development, and building long-lasting relationships. The role requires balancing Journey Construction's building operations with establishing a self-performed business unit.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Planning
- Collaborate with the Preconstruction and Business Development departments on project pursuits.
- Provide oversight for operations to promote efficiency and innovation.
- Develop and implement strategies to encourage growth in the self-perform business units at Journey Construction, as well as with external clients in the local and regional markets.
- Create short-term and long-term business plans.
- Collaborate with Journey Group's HR staff to recruit and onboard new team members in carpentry, steel, and general construction trades.
- Establish goals and strategies for the self-perform division through collaboration with management teams within the division.
- Cultivate leadership capabilities, skills training, and succession planning to ensure a strong and capable leadership team and a pipeline of future leaders.
- Develop and execute marketing and sales strategies.
- Stay informed about industry trends and best practices to maintain recognition as a leader in the industry.
Cost Management
- Provide monthly financial cost reports to the Division Leader and Corporate Leaders.
- Analyze and approve budgets, financial reports, and forecasts, making adjustments as necessary to ensure financial stability and profitability.
- Conduct cash flow and manpower projection analyses as needed for budgeting and planning purposes.
- Regularly monitor project costs and assess the effectiveness of the change management process.
- Support job-site cost management, including monitoring job profitability and the timeliness of payments.
- Review and assist with all estimating and budgeting efforts to identify potential scope gaps for self-perform work.
- Provide insight and preconstruction services to other team members within Journey construction
Field & Project Management
- Ensure that best practices and procedures for Journey are implemented and followed.
- Collaborate closely with Safety, Quality, Lean, and other corporate departments to align departmental initiatives and expectations with our vision and goals.
- Conduct audits and assessments of project safety, quality, progress, and financial status as needed.
- Develop training programs and initiatives for people development.
- Manage risks and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.
Relationship Management
- Promote the guiding principles and core values of Journey Group.
- Collaborate closely with the Safety, Lean, and Quality departments, along with other support teams, to align strategies with Journey Construction's initiatives and core values.
- Establish and maintain communication with owners and other stakeholders to facilitate project activities.
- Represent the company to the public as well as new and existing clients.
- Foster strong industry connections with associations and maintain relationships with state and local governments.
- Participate in industry associations and attend public and community events to build relationships and enhance the company's reputation and market presence in the self-perform division.
- Must be able and willing to create and maintain a good working relationship with all employees within the team.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Project Management, or related field; 5 years of experience managing commercial construction projects; or the equivalent of education and experience to meet the essential functions of the position.
- Strong knowledge of construction materials, processes, and equipment is essential. The candidate must possess the ability to read and interpret documents such as construction plans, blueprints, structural drawings, and plan sets.

- Must be 18 years of age or older to safely work in a construction environment.
Work Environment / Physical Demands

- Some work takes place in an indoor office setting equipped with a computer, desk, phone, and other typical office equipment.

- Must be able to consistently move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly on job sites with unfinished and uneven surfaces.
- Some work takes place in outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be able to retain a stationary position for extended periods of time occasionally depending on the task.
- Must be able to transfer materials ranging from the ground to overhead occasionally.
- Must be able to move material up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Must be able to safely use hand and power tools or other safety equipment on occasion.
- Travel to other locations is required (mostly day trips).
