As a Credit Officer - Executive Director within the Middle Market Banking & Specialized Industries team, you will partner with a cross-functional team delivering credit solutions that support our clients' financing needs, ranging from working capital and general corporate purposes to acquisition finance and leveraged buy-outs to dividend recapitalizations. You will be responsible for both credit approval and management of a team of risk professionals as they work with clients consisting of family-owned businesses, Mid-Cap corporates, and financial sponsor-owned companies. Credit executions include bilateral structures and pro-rata syndications as well as institutional and direct loans. Critical to this role is the ability to develop a broad and deep understanding of the business, financial, competitive and industry risks faced by clients in the assigned portfolio and utilize that view to guide a team in the proper risk grading of borrowers, analysis of credit requests, structuring of credit facilities and negotiation of credit agreements and other loan documentation. Additionally, this role has a major impact on portfolio quality and you will be responsible for implementing the policies and procedures necessary to achieve the mission of the Risk Organization and ensure they are being adhered to on an ongoing basis. The work environment is dynamic and fast-paced, a reflection of the industry as well as the type and size of clients the team supports. Travel is required from time-to-time.
Job Responsibilities
- Utilize excellent credit analysis skills and financial modeling knowledge to independently manage a team in the underwriting and structuring of new transactions and management of their assigned credit portfolios
- Appropriately assess risks / mitigants, balance risk / reward, diligently manage renewals, amendments and new transactions and maintain acceptable credit reporting metrics
- Form well thought out, independent views and be able to voice your opinion in a clear, concise manner and defend your position with partners and senior leadership
- Lead complex transactions including negotiations and legal documentation for bilateral and pro-rata syndicated finance structures as well as institutional loan executions
- Work proactively, in a constructive, diplomatic manner, with both internal and external stakeholders to keep transactions moving
- Act with a sense of urgency and drive execution to meet all deadlines and meet clients' expectations
- Partner effectively to develop fulsome client relationships
- Establish yourself as an expert on Structuring and Credit Policy in order to be viewed as the “go-to” person in credit by internal stakeholders and clients alike
- Provide leadership in the market by being a positive contributor to the team, including mentoring and coaching less experienced team members, embracing change, and participating in various projects or improvement exercises for the benefit of the organization
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills both internally and externally and use those communication skills to effectively solve problems
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- BA/BS/BBA degree is required
- Completion of a major corporate or commercial bank credit training program (or the equivalent corporate banking/corporate finance experience) and a thorough understanding of bank credit policies and procedures
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in commercial banking/lending including extensive credit analysis, structuring, loan documentation, and knowledge of ancillary bank products, including cash management and derivatives
- Superior credit, accounting, corporate finance, analytical and financial modeling skills
- Experience underwriting leveraged M&A and sponsor transactions
- Solid understanding of loan documentation and ability to negotiate credit agreements
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills along with strong attention to details
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills with ability to manage competing priorities under tight deadlines
- Proven ability to collaborate and build strong partnerships
- Intellectual curiosity with a prove ability to learn quickly
- Excellent work ethic including ability to take initiative, self-direct, and perform well under pressure
