Job Description

Description: The Trauma Injury Prevention Specialist will identify the mechanisms of injury and utilize data to study traumatic injuries, risk behavior and environmental factors. Daily SBIRT process which focuses on the impact alcohol and substance use have on trauma patients, mechanisms of injury and reducing trauma recidivism is essential in this position. Develop and implement prevention initiatives for incidence and impact reduction of intentional and unintentional violence and injury in the community, region and/or the State of Texas. This role will mobilize resources and partner with community healthcare organizations, law enforcement agencies, schools, faith-based entities and substance abuse coalitions to develop informed and cost-efficient violence and injury prevention strategies. This position will also influence local policy, promote effective prevention legislation and environmental strategies as well as direct professional educational opportunities such as the JPS annual trauma symposium.

Typical Duties

Identifies the mechanisms of injury and utilizes data to study traumatic injuries, risk behaviors, and environmental factors to develop, implement and evaluate initiatives to impact reduction of intentional and unintentional violence and injury.

  • Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT): for each viable trauma patient admitted 24 hours or longer. Motivational interviewing and providing appropriate referrals and education during the SBIRT process.
  • Strengthens community knowledge of violence and injury prevention by participating in local and state conferences relative to scientific evidence informed research, policies, strategies and evaluation.
  • Promotes community education utilizing the trauma registry data. Organizes and promotes (1) injury prevention initiatives and (2) effective injury initiatives to the community.
  • Educates providers by equipping them to transmit skills and knowledge to others.
  • Organizes and assists an annual trauma conference with national speakers, on topics relevant to specific identified opportunities for improved patient care, as well as strategies for strengthening the trauma system.
  • Researches, designs and speaks on prevention topics in a public format.
  • Provides mentorship and leadership to external trauma center injury prevention specialists.
  • Fosters coalitions and networks to develop community impact goals and strategies related to injury prevention.
  • Engages and participates on local councils and coalitions which have a comprehensive impact on injury prevention.
  • Effectively communicates with partners and media.
  • Facilitates change related to organizational practices.
  • Adopts change and influences norms to reduce injury within JPS Health Network.
  • Participates with Community Affairs and Communications Departments to provide content for messaging throughout the District.
  • Contributes to continued readiness for the ACS Level I Trauma Center designation. Partners with other District initiatives for the attainment of the District’s mission.
  • Develops education materials and curriculum for community-wide education programs.
  • Development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of injury prevention programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science or Public Health from an accredited college or university.
  • 3 plus years of work experience in program development related to public health, violence, or injury prevention in associated field.
  • 1 plus years work experience in data analysis mechanisms of violence and traumatic injury for prioritization of program selection, development, implementation and evaluation.

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

  • Certified in Public Health through the National Board of Public Health Examiners.

OR

  • Must be a Certified Health Education Specialist through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Public Health from an accredited college or University.
  • 2 plus years of work experience in program development/implementation/evaluation, public health, or hospital safety.
