1 REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to Model Shop Supervisor.
2 PURPOSE
2.1 Function
2.1.1 Sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate tools, mechanisms, and machines for experimental purposes.
2.2 Authority
2.2.1 Interrupt production at any time quality or safety standards are questioned.
2.2.2 Follow and implement Model Lab and Safety policies and procedures for the organization.
3 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
3.1 Consults with engineer and other personnel regarding product information such as design, capacity and purpose, and types of material to be used to fabricate product;
3.2 Analyzes written specifications, drawings, rough sketches, and verbal instructions to plan layout and determine sequence of operations;
3.3 Selects metal stock and lays out design according to dimensions computed from scale drawings;
3.4 Designs fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs;
3.5 Sets up and operated metalworking machines tools such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, or grinder to machine parts to specifications, and verifies conformance of parts to specifications;
3.6 Tests experimental models under simulated operating conditions for such purposes as development, standardization, and feasibility of design;
3.7 Installs parts and materials such as sheet metal covering, hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, lubricants, and batteries into machines and mechanisms;
3.8 Evaluates experimental procedures and recommends changes or modifications for efficiency and adaptability to setup production;
3.9 Establishes work procedures for fabricating new structural products;
3.10 Fabricates molds and power press dies to produce plastic parts and stamp metal parts. Performs heat treating and heliarc welding;
3.11 Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

4.2 Ability to systematically disassemble and reassemble equipment.
4.3 Ability to build new fixtures/gages with assistance.

5 SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements
6 WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in a manufacturing environment. This role is routinely exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. This job may also be exposed to the Test or Model Lab. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
7 QUALIFICATIONS
7.1 High School Diploma or equivalent.
7.2 Preferred 1 year minimum tool or model making experience.
7.3 Excellent communication skills are mandatory.
8 PHYSICAL DEMANDS
8.1 Prolonged periods of standing and performing repetitive tasks.
8.2 Must be able to lift up to 32 pounds at a time.
8.3 Must have manual dexterity in order to assemble products or machines as directed.
8.4 Must have excellent hand-eye coordination.
8.5 Ability to differentiate between colored wires, tabs, and electronic components.
8.6 Must wear gloves, safety glasses, safety shoes, and ear protection, per the Elemental Operations Instructions Safety Points.
9 POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position may require extended hours and possible weekend work.
10 TRAVEL
Travel between worksites may be required.
