POSITION SUMMARY 
This position maintains the condition of the County’s parks and recreation areas to provide a clean and safe environment for workers and the public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position.  However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may also be required or assigned.

  • Performs manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of public infrastructure within the park system, including light plumbing, light electrical and routine interior/exterior maintenance.

  • Performs parks maintenance such as repairs to fences, benches, picnic tables, garbage cans, signs, shelters, and any other existing structures.  

  • Maintains walking trails and ensures the trail is clear of any obstructions.  

  • Manages invasive vegetation in and around parks, greenways and greenbelts. Ensures plants, trees, and vegetation are free of disease and parasites.  

  • Prunes healthy trees using proper pruning techniques. Removes dead or hazardous trees in the parks.  Removes fallen leaves.  Plants new trees and grass.

  • Performs landscape maintenance, including mowing, edging and mulching beds, weeding, watering, fertilizing, turf renovation and pruning; calibrates seed and fertilizer spreaders to uniformly plant seed or fertilize turf; blends and applies correctly liquid fertilizer.  

  • Ensures park’s restrooms, picnic shelters and recreation areas are clean and in working order.

  • Maintains appearance of all parks to ensure the areas are free of litter, graffiti, trash, fallen tree limbs and other debris.

  • Operates maintenance equipment, including but not limited to, both steering column and lap bar zero-turn mowers, gas powered string trimmer, gas powered backpack blower, push behind mower, push behind turbine blower, pressure washer, and backpack sprayer.

  • Operates chemical sprayers, turf vehicles, spreaders, aerators, backhoes, and front-end loaders, as well as, various power tools such as line trimmers, hedge trimmers and chainsaws in the performance of their duties.

  • Cleans, lubricates, and performs preventive maintenance or repair on equipment.

  • Ensures proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment.

  • Maintains appropriate records including complete equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, and other related data.

  • Cleans and maintains equipment and storage area.

  • Completes written records of labor and materials used for each work project. 

  • Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.

  • Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority.  Follows all policies for reporting.

  • May be assigned to rotating on-call duties including emergency response and/or nighttime or weekend hours for emergency response or special events.  

  • Provides backup assistance to other department personnel as needed.  

  • Other duties as assigned. 


EXPECTATIONS 

  • Interprets and applies Federal, State, municipal, and Department rules, regulations, and policies.

  • Attends work regularly and is punctual.

  • Behaves professionally and presents an appropriate standard of grooming, hygiene, and dress that align with health and safety standards. 

  • Conducts self in such a way as to reflect positively on the County.

  • Fosters positive working relationships and accepts new responsibilities.

  • Learns and understands the safe practices for the job being performed and complies with the safe work practices and personal protective requirements for the job.


MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in landscape maintenance and or similar industry.

  • May be required to complete OSHA 10-hr or 30-hr safety training by timeframedesignated by the County.

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of park and facility maintenance operations.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions.

  • Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment purpose, use, and maintenance.

  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions and adhere to prescribed departmental routines.

  • Skill in reading and understanding documentation, schematics, manuals, blueprints, etc., required for position/projects.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records of assigned activities, if required.

  • Skill in time management; prioritizing duties to accomplish a high volume of quality work product requiring minimal supervision.

  • Ability to define problems, exercise sound judgment, and address a variety of situations successfully.

  • Knowledge and ability to follow the policies and practices contained in the County Personnel Handbook. 

  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and respond after hours if needed.

  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of lifting/moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 75 pounds or more while performing essential functions of the job.

  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.

  • Work may involve mobility over rough or difficult terrain.  Work may also be performed above or below ground, to include heights over 10 feet, as well as underground crawl spaces.

  • Ability to observe details at close range.

  • Communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas so others understand.

  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions. 

  • Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.

  • Work is performed daily both in and outdoors under all weather conditions and may include exposure to inclement weather, chemicals, seasonal temperature extremes, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, hazardous waste, noise, equipment and vibrations, airborne materials, active construction sites, and traffic.
