What are the responsibilities and job description for the Farm Hand position at Juneberry Ridge?
At Juneberry we use livestock as a tool in our regenerative agriculture approach to managing land and producing food across over 750 acres. As such, the Farm Hand will help manage multiple species under prescriptive/rotational grazing. The Farm Hand will be responsible for the general well-being and production of Juneberry livestock. Therefore, working knowledge of animal husbandry for sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, pigs, cows, and bees are key for success. The Farm Hand will be responsible for supervision and upkeep of our animal infrastructure including but not limited to knowledge of electric fencing, water systems, and should be comfortable using common tools. The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, passionate about regenerative agriculture, comfortable around animals, comfortable communicating with teammates and able to perform the duties and responsibilities of this job with minimal supervision or direction once on board. Physical strength, endurance, and attention to detail are essential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties (including but not limited to):
- Provide animal husbandry such as feeding, watering, managing minerals, rotating, monitoring and other as needed
- Help create grazing plans and maps for our livestock.
- Establish and maintain a working relationship with the farm team.
- Install, maintain, and improve animal containment/fencing as needed/directed.
- Steward our land, care for soils, and wildlife, improve pastures and help create a resilient Agri-ecosystem.
- Help Livestock Program Manager to document and keep records of progress, programs, and plans including but not limited to purchases, applicable immunizations, offspring and sales.
- Safely use farm equipment as needed, inspecting them prior to use, including but not limited to: Trucks, utility carts, tractors plus implements, skid steer, backhoe, lull, forklift, mowers, etc.
- Use small hand equipment such as shovels, rakes, pruning shears, saws/chainsaws, hedge, or brush trimmers, weed eaters, axes and others as assigned.
- Develop/help further develop business enterprise plans, stacking functions and generating revenue
- Report all farm equipment, infrastructure, and grounds issues to the Livestock Program Manager in a timely manner.
- Adhere to quality standards and safety regulations.
- Assist with guest hospitality such as tours, educational workshops, working with interns/volunteers and/or special events.
- Attend seasonal markets if/as assigned in advance
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, maintaining personal and professional networks, and joining professional organizations, where appropriate.
- Any other duties needed to help drive to our Vison, fulfill our Mission, and abide by our Organization’s Values.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Prefer experience working directly with livestock preferably on an active farm
- Some working knowledge of regenerative agriculture practices and principles.
- Valid Driver’s License with a reliable source of transportation to and from farm.
- Comfortable working in extreme weather fluctuations
- Physical stamina and dexterity, with ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate hand tools and/or powered equipment.
- Knowledge/ability to operate tractor/skid steer etc.
- Willingness to work on weekends
- Must pass background check.
- Will obtain 10 HR OSHA safety training, through Juneberry programing
