Job Summary:
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will lead the organization’s comprehensive fundraising program, working to secure vital financial support through individual giving, major gifts, planned giving, cause marketing, and corporate sponsorships. This strategic role requires an individual with a strong sales background, expertise in managing a pipeline, and proven success in securing multiyear gifts. The CDO will drive revenue growth to support the organization's mission and initiatives.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervise a team of six: two Development Directors, one Director of Philanthropy, Director of Events & Development, Events Manager and Events Specialist. Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to the team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Fundraising Leadership: Set and execute the strategic direction for all fundraising efforts, including capital and major gifts, planned giving, corporate sponsorships and annual giving initiatives and events. Develop multiyear fundraising strategies that support the organization’s annual budget and long-term growth and sustainability. This includes creating creative and strategic partnership / sponsorship opportunities that align with the programming and operational needs of the organization.
- Revenue Generation: Drive revenue growth by meeting an annual individual fundraising goal of $800K and guiding the team to achieve an annual fundraising goal of approximately $10M. Additionally oversee reaching the annual milestones of a 5 year, $50 million dollar comprehensive campaign. Lead efforts to expand donor pipelines, identify new qualified prospects and diversify revenue sources.
- Sales and Pipeline Management: Utilize advanced sales and pipeline management skills and tools to optimize donor engagement, tracking, and forecasting. Maintain a robust pipeline of prospective donors and ensure effective moves management.
- Relationship Building: Cultivate and manage relationships with high-level donors, corporate partners, and stakeholders to secure long-term, multiyear commitments. Implement targeted engagement plans to build loyalty and encourage increased giving.
- Donor Strategy & Stewardship: Develop and implement donor engagement and stewardship strategies to maintain strong, lasting relationships with supporters. Ensure all donors experience high-quality interactions that foster long-term engagement and investment.
- Team Development: Lead and mentor the development team, focusing on goal-setting, professional growth, and a positive, results-oriented culture. Provide coaching and support to staff members to maximize their contributions and enhance team performance.
- Campaign & Project Leadership: Plan and oversee comprehensive/capital campaigns, fundraising events, and special projects, coordinating with events, marketing and communications teams to maximize impact and align messaging with organizational goals.
- Collaboration with Executive Leadership: Partner with the CEO, board members, and other senior leaders to align fundraising activities with organizational priorities. Support board members in identifying and cultivating potential donors.
- Data & Reporting: Oversee tracking and analysis of fundraising data to assess effectiveness, refine strategies, and report progress to the executive team and board. Use data insights to enhance decision-making and improve fundraising outcomes.
- Budgeting & Financial Management: Develop and manage the development budget, monitoring expenditures to ensure resources are used effectively and that financial goals are met. Support financial planning related to fundraising efforts.
- Innovation & Growth: Evaluate fundraising practices, stay informed of industry trends, and implement innovative strategies to expand and diversify the donor base. Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and impact of development activities.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Sales/Fundraising Expertise: Proven success in sales, fundraising or related experience, with a strong background in managing pipelines and securing high-value, multiyear gifts.
- Leadership & Management: Strong leadership abilities with experience in supervising and developing teams in a fundraising or sales environment.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to set and execute long-term fundraising strategies that align with organizational goals.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging with donors, stakeholders, and team members.
- Relationship Building: Skilled in cultivating and managing relationships with high-level donors, corporate partners, and other key stakeholders.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret data, analyze trends, and adjust strategies to maximize fundraising outcomes.
- Proficiency in CRM and Fundraising Software: Familiarity with donor management systems (e.g., Blackbaud, Salesforce) and other relevant tools preferred.

Education & Experience:
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Marketing, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in development, sales, leadership or related field, with a strong record in revenue generation and team management. Preferred personal or professional experience with nonprofit organizations as employee, volunteer or consultant.
- Fundraising & Sales Experience: Demonstrated success in securing major gifts, investments and/or multiyear contributions.
- Leadership Experience: Experience leading and developing teams.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting, occasional standing, and minimal lifting (up to 15 pounds).
- Ability to travel occasionally for donor meetings, events, or organizational functions.
