Chief Financial Officer
The Chief Financial Officer provides leadership and support to the organization in the areas of financial management, information technology, human resources, facilities, and overall resource management. The CFO reports to the CEO and Finance Committee and proactively supports the organization in achieving its strategic and operational objectives. The Senior Director will ensure that budget management, cost-benefit analysis, forecasting, and oversight of new funding are effectively managed to ensure the organization’s financial health and vitality.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Strategy, Planning and Management
- Provide insight and recommendations on both short-term and long-term growth plans of the organization based on the CEO/Board-approved Strategic Plan.
- Communicate, engage, and interact with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, helping to drive the strategic plan.
- Assess and evaluate financial performance, providing monthly analysis of actual to budgeted results. Prepare the annual budget with detail by month for approval by the Board.
- Evaluate the accounting department and make suggestions for automating processes and procedures to increase efficiency.
- Identify, acquire, and implement systems and software to report on critical financial and operational information.
- Create and establish yearly financial objectives that align with the strategic plan.
- Select and engage consultants, bankers, auditors, insurance brokers, payroll services, and other necessary vendors.
- Supervise the finance and administration team, currently including the Revenue Cycle Manager and Billing Administrators.
Financial Management
- Provide hands-on support for the reporting needs of funding agencies, organization-wide development needs, and grants.
- Ensure all investments are wisely managed. Report to the Finance/Investment Sub-Committee on investment performance and review allocation following best practices and the Investment Plan.
- Develop and maintain a system of internal controls to safeguard assets of the organization.
- Oversee the coordination of independent audits, ensuring all A-133 audit issues are resolved and all 403(b) compliance issues are met, including the filing of Form 5500.
- Ensure the annual Form 990 is timely filed.
- Prepare monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Prepare annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP for auditors.
- Oversee cash flow planning and ensure fund availability.
- Explore new investment opportunities and provide recommendations on potential returns and risks.
- Maintain outstanding banking relationships and strategic alliances with vendors and business partners.
Financial Relations and Policies
- Ensure an information technology disaster recovery plan is in place.
- Represent the organization to funders, banks, financial partners, institutions, investors, insurance brokers, public auditors, and officials.
Accounting, General Ledger, Administration, and Operations
- Provide individual department financials compared to the budget and review them with the leadership team.
- Approve and ensure timely filing and compliance with all federal, state, and local tax returns, including payroll returns.
Risk and Facility Management
- Oversee business insurance plans and ensure health care coverage analysis is conducted.
- Ensure that all leases meet federal, state, and local regulations and facilities are properly insured.
- Manage and negotiate office leases and practice space.
- Ensure disaster recovery plans are in place.
- Oversee all contract negotiations and ensure financial and legal safeguards are in place.
Human Resources
- Support the HR Manager on employee relations.
- Oversee payroll, taxes, and benefits administration.
- Establish and maintain the HR information system and ensure that we have necessary employee compliance documentation and other data.
- Establish and maintain necessary HR policies and procedures manuals.
Other
- Report any activities that may violate established laws, regulations, policies, or procedures. Raise questions about any actions contrary to law or policy taken by another staff member or by self and report the matter to the CEO and Finance Committee.
Education/Certificate/License/ Skills and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.
- CPA or equivalent experience preferred; MBA preferred.
- Some background in public accounting preferred.
- 5 years of accounting or finance experience with working knowledge of cost reporting, billing, tax-exempt status, and credit financing.
- Preferred experience working in nonprofit and/or small business environments, with a strong understanding of contracts.
- MUST HAVE hands-on technical experience in the following:
- Budgeting, Auditing, Planning, Cost accounting, Financial analysis, IT management, HR management.
- Outstanding knowledge and understanding of GAAP compliance and reporting.
- QuickBooks experience.
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, confidence, and executive presence—ability to motivate staff.
- Excellent reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Hybrid work schedule of three days per week in-office.
