The Cardiac Cath RN assumes responsibility for patient safety, and delivery of quality, compassionate, comprehensive and attentive healthcare to the whole person within the context of a professional, collaborative, respectful, and team-oriented environment. The nursing professional in the Cardiac Catheterization area is responsible for and participates in all aspects of admission, assessment, pre & post procedural care, patient teaching, transfers (in-house & outside of institution) and takes emergency after-hours call on a rotational basis. The nursing professional will assist in non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic Cardiac Catheterization Lab procedures. Scope of practice to include, but not limited to:

Physical Requirements

The team member will need to frequently assist lifting patients and heavy equipment. Must be able to work in a stressful environment, work independently, making sound decisions, detail oriented, alert, and self-motivated. Ability to push/pull up to 40lbs, carry and lift up to 50lbs.

Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, BSN preferred
- RN- Current RN licensure in the state of Florida
- Two years of Acute Critical Care experience Cardiovascular, ICU, or CVICU
- BLS certification for Health Care Providers from American Heart Association
- ACLS certification from the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification from American Heart Association

- Utilize Nursing Process to set goals, prescribe nursing actions to meet the goals and the physical, cultural, spiritual and needs of our patient across the continuum of life
- Provide appropriate patient education & discharge information relevant to patient disposition and based on patient age, literacy and learning needs
- Develop effective communication with patients and their support systems to enhance knowledge base and comfort
- Anticipate Physician’s needs
- Verify and execute Physician orders
- Anticipate patient reactions to medications, procedures, interventions, allergies & respond appropriately
- Exhibits excellent time management according to assigned caseload and department census
- Complete new staff member orientation learning modules, hospital-based competencies, and education as assigned by preceptor, Nursing Manager, &/or department Director
- Assesses, interpret and respond appropriately to patient data, i.e.) lab results, allergies, vital signs, pre & post instructions
- Recognize lethal and non-lethal arrhythmia, verbalize comprehension of appropriate care
- Operate all Cardiology monitoring equipment
- Start peripheral IV’s and perform phlebotomy
- Arterial and Venous sheath management, including IBP monitoring via pressurized transducer, sheath removal and hemostasis management
- Hematoma management including hemorrhage protocol, FEMSTOP application, and indications
- Knowledge of pulse assessment; apical, carotid, femoral, pedal and radial
- Assessment-Neuro, Respiratory, GI, GU, Integumentary, Vital Signs, Pain Scale, Psychosocial Educational Needs
- Cardiac Assessment-evaluate chest pain, ECG & Rhythm interpretation, peripheral pulse, arterial pressure, LV Pressure, LVEDP, EF, RA, RV, PA & PCW pressure & waveform; pre, post and intra procedurally
- Respiratory Assessment-blood gas, O2 administration, airway management, suctioning
- Cardiovascular, pulse assessment-apical, carotid, femoral, pedal, radial procedures- Able to perform EKG, Pulse Oximetry, assist with Stress Tests, EKG, Cardiolite, Dobutamine, Optison, ECHO, Stress ECHO, TEE, CV Procedures,
- Circulate Right & Left Heart Catheterizations, Percutaneous Interventions, IVUS, Arthrectomy, both directional and rotational.
- Cardiac Cath Lab specific equipment use, care & quality controls-hemochron, accucheck, Med Rad Injector, IABP, External Pacer, Defibrillator, Impella, Rotoblater
- Contact appropriate nursing unit to alert staff nurse of pre-procedural requirements, gather pertinent patient data related to procedure, arrange for transportation, perform proper order entry and obtain proper paperwork
- Provide appropriate nursing unit/staff nurse with patient report regarding post procedural care including access site management, vital sign requirements,
- Maintains meticulous and accurate documentation
- Maintain professional attitude
- Adhere to Cardiovascular Service Line uniform requirements
- Maintain knowledge base and seek out learning opportunities related to new equipment, supplies, and techniques
- Communicate with patient in preferred language, knowledge of accessing and use of language line
- Report any incidents through proper chain of command and complete incident reports as needed in timely manner
- Practice is governed by policies, procedures & protocols. Critical thinking is vital for the inherently stressful and fluid situations. Exhibit ability to work independently as well as member of a precision team
- Daily patient pre-op, preparatory phone calls and post op follow-up phone calls
- Participate in unit-based initiatives, community outreach, and team building projects
- Assist with transport
- Assist with growth, development and public image of Jupiter Medical Center and Cardiovascular Service Line
- Participate in hospital based and unit specific self-evaluation
- Nursing professional will be evaluated annually by manager or Director
- Nursing professional shall consult with preceptor and/or manager on areas of concern, areas for improvement, and excellence of colleagues.
- The RN applies nursing process and theories, as well as principles of psycho-social and physical sciences, in assessing, planning, diagnosing, implementing, evaluating, and modifying patient care utilizing evidence-based practices. The RN practice autonomously within professional nursing standards, the ANA Code of Ethics and the ANA Bill of Rights.
- The RN strives for quality outcomes and innovative practice in accordance with the Florida Nursing Practice Act and the Hospital/departmental policies.
- The RN ensures practice is in accordance with competency required for that area. This position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self (or others who are under her/his direction). This is done through participation in quality assurance or performance improvement initiatives. The RN provides care in a collaborative manner with other disciplines to ensure optimal, individualized patient care and outcomes. In managing patient care the RN will take a leadership role coordinating the interdisciplinary team working in collaboration with other health team members to enhance patient outcomes.
- All aspects of the RN performance supports service excellence and a healing environment. The RN identifies and communicates needed unit resources or equipment to be included in budget.
