INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE
DEFINITION
Under supervision to assist a teacher, teachers, or specialist by performing tasks which are supportive of the instructional program and conducive to the social and emotional growth of students; and to do related work as required. Positions in this class provide assistance in a variety of job situations. Work is performed under the direction and/or supervision of a teacher or other certificated professional, providing instructional and/or clerical support to that person. Assignments are made to a variety of sites throughout the district and may involve interaction with students ranging from pre-schoolers to adults. The sample duties listed below represent a wide range of activities that may be assigned depending on the needs and circumstances of the particular job situation.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*
·Assists in directing class activities based on specific instructions.
·Works with individuals or with small groups of students under the supervision of a certificated professional.
·Prepares, organizes, directs and supervises instructional and recreational games and activities.
·Assists in the operation and supervision of learning centers.
·Assists in the preparation of instructional and training materials, such as charts, displays, signs and drawings.
·Assists in maintaining classroom control according to policies established by the supervising person and the school administration.
·Corrects workbooks, papers and tests.
·Prepares for, assists with, and cleans up after various classroom projects.
·Supervises students during play periods and on field trips.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
·Performs routine clerical duties, such as keeping attendance records, preparing attendance reports, keeping inventory of supplies and materials, typing and duplicating.
·Assists in maintaining a neat and orderly room environment.
·Assists students with washing, toilet and personal care.
·Operates audiovisual equipment.
·Collects, assembles, catalogues, inventories, and distributes resource material.
·Performs other related duties as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
English usage, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic.
Ability to:
Understand, communicate, and be sensitive to the problems of students and their parents;
Use good, consistent judgment in the solution of problems;
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;

Demonstrate motor skills and mobility sufficient to participate in the educational process;
Concentrate on current task in spite of distractions in an active, busy environment;
Deal with hostile, emotion, angry or ill persons in an effective manner;
Effectively perform intervention procedures to prevent fights and other altercations;
Work on more than one task at a time;
Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and other classroom equipment in a safe and efficient manner;
Lift, move, or push or pull cart with light to medium-weight objects such as classroom materials and equipment;
Maintain regular, steady attendance.
Experience:
Background experience with children and/or adolescents.
Education:
Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
