Job Summary
As a veterinary assistant at Just for Cats you will help in providing care to our clients and our patients. You will work alongside our veterinarian and certified/licensed veterinary technician. This includes working directly with patients and their families as well as many behind-the-scenes tasks to keep the hospital functioning and running smoothly. Knowledge of animal behavior will be learned to recognize signs of comfort along with fear, anxiety, or stress in cats. Our hospital incorporates fear free, low stress, and feline friendly handling.
The assistant position is very versatile and will require the ability to multitask and learn skills in a large variety of areas. Responsibilities will start with learning the basic tasks like cleaning the hospital and equipment, doing laundry, restocking medical supplies, running basic lab work, and learning the front desk. Once you excel in the basic operations you will move more into the patient care and medical training aspects such as holding and taking radiographs, monitoring and assisting during anesthesia and preparing and administering medications.
Duties
- Maintain extreme cleanliness in all areas of the hospital which includes end-of-day cleanup and closing procedures
- Perform routine cleanliness and maintenance of equipment
- Client Services duties such as front desk, answering phone calls and texts, invoicing clients, taking payments and keeping clients updated on appointment times
- Set up for varying types of procedures and treatments including preparing medications, setting up for specific types of examinations, setting up and learning to obtain digital radiographs, prepare equipment for sedation, and prepare materials for blood and urine sampling
- Perform basic laboratory procedures and sample analysis. This may include learning to take small blood samples
- Provide education on their pet’s care to clients in the examination room and over phone/text/email.
- Administer pet medications orally and by injection
- Assist licensed/credentialed medical staff with direct patient handling during examinations, treatments, and procedures
- Depending on the days you work you may be trained in all stages of surgery/dentistry/anesthesia, which includes setting up before, assisting or monitoring anesthesia during and cleaning up afterwards.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to lift to 30lbs without injury
- Excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of veterinary terminology and procedures
- Previous , with references
- Certification as an Approved Veterinary Assistant
Stated pay range below is negotiable based on relevant experience and certifications
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour
Expected hours: 25 – 40 per week
