Job Description
Emmanuel is a loving, lively Episcopal church located in Virginia Beach, Virginia that appreciates a wide variety of music and enjoys robust congregational singing. We are seeking a part-time (15 - 20 hours per week) Organist/Choir Director who will plan and administer the music programs of the parish with a broad understanding of the importance of music in enriching worship and of inviting the broad participation of the Emmanuel community.
The choir director/organist will be responsible for playing piano and (electronic) organ for worship services, special church events and seasonal observances, and for preparing musical groups for participation. We currently enjoy an adult choir, a children’s choir, and a handbell choir. The position is salaried, and there is flexibility in hours (outside of church services). Salary is in the $25,000 - $30,000 range, depending on education and experience as well as negotiable responsibilities.
Responsibilities may include:
- Play the organ and/or piano for one Sunday service per week
- Direct musical groups, including weekly rehearsals
- Prepare musical selections for services
- Collaborate with clergy in choosing service music
- Support special services, including weddings, funerals if able, and seasonal observances
- Encourage participation in music ministries
Qualifications of the ideal candidate:
- A bachelor’s degree in music, or equivalent education, training, and/or experience
- Ability to play organ and piano
- Ability to direct singers and other musicians
- Familiarity with liturgical worship, including hymns, praise music, and other works of sacred music
- Ability to work with individuals of different personalities and varying musical backgrounds and skill
- Competent administrative, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
