What are the responsibilities and job description for the Turnaround Planner position at JVIC?
A Turnaround Scheduler must have extensive turnaround and project experience and possess an understanding of project controls systems, particularly a thorough understanding of Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling techniques and schedule management. The basic function of this role is to develop, communicate, and maintain a workable turnaround schedule using Primavera P6. This person must also have excellent communication and presentation skills and perform at a high level of engagement.
This person will work on outage, shutdown, turnaround or turnaround/project jobs that require very complex interactions between our customers, partners, vendors and other contractors. The Turnaround Scheduler will work closely with project leadership including the turnaround management team, craft supervision, planning, engineering, safety, quality, procurement and plant operations personnel to provide detailed project-level planning that ensures time and cost-efficient project execution. Further, the Turnaround Scheduler should be incorporating the project teams understanding both the scope of work plan as well as critical aspects of CPM scheduling. The Turnaround Scheduler will ensure that the integrated master schedule correctly reflects all plans. Areas of risk will be identified in engineering, procurement, shutdown, turnaround and start up phases to mitigate these risks. The execution of these plans will be monitored to make sure they are being performed as intended and have the expected results. This position also works closely with inspections and operations to ensure signoff and startup efforts are supported to meet the turnaround completion milestones.
The Turnaround Scheduler will work very closely with the controls group and planners to produce resource loaded schedules that aid in measuring turnaround productivity and forecasting cost. This person will be responsible and accountable to optimize the schedule while balancing out the remaining workload, downtime, and resources.
Responsibilities for Internal Candidates
General Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain resource loaded, level 4 or 5, integrated schedule that encompasses the entire Turnaround scope of work for the execution phase.
- Develop and maintain resource loaded, milestone schedule that encompasses the entire Turnaround Planning effort.
- Generate reports for review during both Pre-T/A and T/A execution.
- Participate in schedule development reviews with maintenance and operations team members.
- Develop Logic Register
- Resource level the schedule.
Pre-Turnaround
- Input Work Plans into schedule as developed by the planner
- Work with Turnaround Planner to establish:

TURNAROUND
- Progress and maintain Turnaround Execution Schedule
- Closely monitor critical path and keep Turnaround Management aware of status
- Check validity of progress that is turned in, by conducting field walks of the work
- Print and distribute daily working schedules and three-shift lookaheads
- Keep Turnaround Superintendent informed of any updates not turned in
- After updating, level, then view histogram over allocations, and inform Turnaround Coordinator and Turnaround Superintendent of status
POST TURNAROUND
- Follow all post turnaround file close-out procedures
- Track progress of post turnaround activities
- Attend and participate in post turnaround critique
- Finalize Turnaround Schedule
- Include Target vs. Actual information in closures
- Actualize activities for final file back-ups
Qualifications for Internal Candidates
Job Requirements / Required Qualifications:
- Over 4 years of scheduling experience with 6 years of varying turnaround experience
- Oracle Primavera P6
- Primavera training, proficiency in use of system
- Understanding of productivity, earned value and reporting progress
- Provide Key Performance indicators from P6 reporting capabilities
- Must have advanced computing skills with working knowledge of all Microsoft Office Suite of products
- Have ability to collaboratively lead project planning and scheduling meetings with any variation of project team participants
- Be able to perform a critical path analysis and report on the path(s)
- Experience working in an operating facility
- Must be able to travel to project/site based on the needs of the organization.
- Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) (optional to have when hired, but will need to have the ability to get one, required)
Physical demands and work environment:
- Physical demands: Occasionally lift 10-50 lbs.
- Work environment: General office Environment and Outdoors in occasionally extreme cold and hot temperatures. Able to work in moderate noise environments and occasionally loud environments. Able to climb stairs, bend, stand, lift, or sit for periods.
