JWCH Mission Statement: JWCH Institute, Inc. is a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with a mission to provide comprehensive health care to low-income and homeless people in the County of Los Angeles.

Position Purpose: The Endodontist is responsible for providing endodontic care within the dentist’s specialty training and experience in a community health clinic setting. The endodontic specialist will support JWCH’s Dental Clinics by serving as both a clinical and non-clinical resource for the full scope of endodontics. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases and injuries of the pulp and associated tissues, teeth, and per-radicular structures. This includes ortho-grade and retrograde treatments, trauma management, regenerative treatments, and familiarity with implant procedures.

Additionally, the specialist will educate patients on preventive measures to promote overall oral health and wellness. As a clinical leader, the specialist provides direct and indirect mentoring, supervision, and feedback to clinical staff. As a professional leader, the specialist delivers high-quality care and ensures responsible stewardship of organizational resources.

Patient Population: For many individuals, accessing dental care goes beyond simply finding the nearest dentist. Some face language and cultural barriers that prevent them from connecting with dental providers, while others lack essential resources such as insurance coverage, transportation, or childcare, making it challenging to visit the dentist. JWCH is dedicated to assisting patients in overcoming these barriers, supporting them in achieving better oral health and improved overall health outcomes.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Examines individuals requesting care, diagnoses their dental conditions, prescribes and performs appropriate dental treatments, or directs others in performing treatments. Refers individuals for specialty consultations or treatments in accordance with approved clinical protocols and guidelines.
  2. Documents patient-dentist encounters promptly and accurately in the patient’s dental record to reflect the nature of the visit, the patient’s condition, and the care or treatment provided. Completes patient referrals, records, and other paperwork as required by the organization.
  3. Educates individuals about oral health, its relationship to overall health, and the prevention of oral health-related diseases.
  4. Performs root canal treatments, endodontic surgeries, and other pulp-related procedures, including post and core build-ups and apicoectomies.
  5. Provides non-clinical mentoring and education to dentists and rotating dental students, focusing on endodontics to enhance the team’s knowledge base.
  6. Offers mentoring and performance feedback directly to staff or indirectly to office supervisors to enhance performance, maximize the scope of practice, and achieve organizational goals.
  7. Travels as necessary to meet operational needs.
  8. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Chief Dental Officer and/or the Associate Dental Director to support organizational goals and program objectives.
  9. Maintains and updates professional skills and knowledge through continuing education courses and materials.
  10. Ensures personal and professional compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and clinic rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures governing dental practice, including those related to workplace safety, public health, and confidentiality.
  11. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of infection and exposure control practices and sterile techniques in dental practice.
  12. Adheres to Dental Department compliance requirements for infection and exposure control and safety as mandated by local, state, and federal guidelines, as well as department directives and clinic policies.
  13. Collaborates effectively with support staff, providing clear expectations and guidance.
  14. Works with the Associate Dental Director, Lead Dentist, and Dental Manager to achieve efficiency, satisfaction, and productivity goals.
  15. Follows JWCH Dental Quality protocols, including maintaining a documentation compliance rate of 85%, and accurately uses smart codes to preserve data integrity. Participates in PDSAs (Quality Improvement Tools) to meet Dental Quality Measure goals.
  16. Adheres to DHSP (LA County Department of HIV and STD Programs) requirements for patients with HIV diagnoses.
  17. Demonstrates a general understanding of dental insurance, including HMOs and PPOs.
  18. Is familiar with Current Dental Terminology (CDT) codes and ICD-10 diagnosis codes relevant to dental diseases.
  19. Follows Dental Department protocols for medical consultations.
  20. Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Requirements:

  1. Graduation from an accredited dental school. 
  2. Current California Dental License.
  3. Completion of an accredited endodontic residency program.
  4. Board Certification as an Endodontist.
  5. Knowledgeable about the Medi-Cal Dental Manual of Criteria and understands covered and non-covered services.
  6. Current DEA Certificate.
  7. Current CPR Certification.
  8. Ability to travel from site to site as needed.
  9. Experience in working with clients and staff from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
  10. Experience with Next-Gen/EDR or Dentrix preferred.

Note: If you become a JWCH provider, you may be able to participate in Loan Repayment Program. A majority of our clinics are NHSC approved sites. The National Health Service Corp may be accepting applications Loan Repayment Program awards. The program is open to licensed primary care medical, dental, and mental and behavior health providers who are employed or have accepted an offer of employment at an NHSC-approved site. Awardees receive up to $50,000 in exchange for two years of service if they practice in a HPSA of 14 above (Tier I). Awardees can also receive up to $30,0000 in exchange for two years of service if they practice in a HPSA of 13 and below (Tier II). You will need to contact National Health Service Corp to apply and receive more information. Upon acceptance, you are encouraged to apply to National Health Service Corp for Loan Repayment Program.
