Summary
Laboratory Tech incumbent reports to the Laboratory Coordinator (CLS). Lab Tech is responsible for the performance of laboratory procedures that require some degree of technical scientific knowledge and experience. Duties are directed and assigned by the Technical Manager. Incumbent is also responsible for initial problem resolution – which includes problem identification, fact gathering, drawing valid conclusions, and submitting proposed resolution to the Technical Manager as well as implementation upon approval.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other Duties may be assigned.
- Routinely demonstrates competency and sustained performance of Lab Assistant duties.
- Performs assigned daily lab assignments, loading and running tests, maintenance of assigned machines under the supervision of CLS or Lab Director.
- Q/C work to include aliquoting process for reagents and calibrators.
- Maintains clean and orderly work area, assists with equipment sterilization, and assists with storage of confirmed samples.
- Provides support and oversight to Send Out Program(s).
- Ensures appropriate supply levels are maintained and reorder notifications are timely, monitor reagent supply levels and expiration dates following Company SOPs.
- Creates reports and/or maintains management logs as assigned.
- Oversight of sample management, ensures all samples are correctly logged, problems transitioned or resolved, and all tests performed before samples are discarded and that Company SOP is followed.
- Provides notification of critical results as assigned.
- Answers phones, calls clients for information needed to process tests as required.
- Adheres to confidential (HIPAA) requirements for personal and proprietary information.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervisory duties do not apply to this level.
However, incumbents may assist with providing support to Lab Assistants & Clerks as directed.

Education and/or Experience
Minimum High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with two (2) years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. This level requires scientific knowledge and skills which might be expected from incumbents at the college "upper division" level or from incumbents who have acquired equivalent knowledge and skills through experience. Bachelor’s Degree (Science related field) preferred.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend a wide array of correspondence including technical manuals and reports. Ability to write business correspondence and reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of mathematics to science related activities. Understanding of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply education level synthesis and common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. As well as deal with problem solving involving several variables and to appropriately recommend solutions.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet software, Microsoft Word Processing software, and the ability to learn and gain proficiency in Laboratory Information System Software and various Laboratory Equipment Software.
