Job Summary:
Acme Scrap is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team at our metal recycling facility. The ideal candidate will be responsible for safely operating heavy machinery to process, load, and transport scrap metal. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring efficient recycling operations while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate Heavy Equipment: Safely operate material handlers, excavators, front-end loaders, forklifts, skid steers, cranes, and other heavy machinery to move, load, and process scrap metal.
  • Material Handling & Sorting: Assist in sorting, processing, and stockpiling ferrous and non-ferrous metals for recycling.
  • Loading & Unloading: Load and unload materials from trucks, railcars, and conveyor belts, ensuring proper handling and distribution.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all Acme Scrap safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental standards to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Equipment Inspections & Maintenance: Perform daily pre- and post-shift inspections, report any issues, and conduct basic maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Environmental Protection: Ensure compliance with spill prevention, waste disposal, and hazardous material handling guidelines.
  • Team Coordination: Work closely with supervisors, truck drivers, and other team members to maintain smooth operations.
  • Record-Keeping: Document equipment usage, daily activities, and report any mechanical or safety concerns.

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Experience: Minimum 1-3 years of experience operating heavy equipment in a scrap yard, construction, demolition, or industrial setting.
  • Licensing & Certifications: Equipment operator certification preferred; CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is a plus.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, sit for extended periods, work in varying weather conditions, and operate machinery in dusty, noisy environments.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to follow safety procedures and ensure proper sorting of materials.
  • Technical Skills: Basic knowledge of machinery maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment manuals.
  • Work Ethic: Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.

Work Environment & Schedule:
  • Outdoor, industrial setting with exposure to heavy machinery, metal debris, dust, and variable weather conditions.
  • Full-time position with potential overtime and weekend shifts.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required: Hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection.
