K-State Research and Extension Douglas County in partnership with K-State Research and Extension Local Food Systems is seeking a Local Food Fellow to complete a local food system project focusing on improving accessibility of locally grown food.
This part-time, 16-week fellowship will run from February- May 2025. The exact start and end time for the fellowship is negotiable depending on candidate availability.
Responsibilities
- Primary responsibility for this position will be to support the food security priority of Douglas County’s community health improvement plan.
- Work collaboratively with community partners to identify opportunities to improve access to locally grown food. Community partners for this project include but are not limited to LiveWell Douglas County, Lawrence Farmers Market, Douglas County Sustainability Office, and Douglas County Food Policy Council.
- Gather data to map fresh food access (ex. grocery stores, farmers markets, convenience stores) in Douglas County.
- Research programs to expand fresh and local food options and availability at Douglas County food vendors.
- Complete the final report to be submitted to K-State Research and Extension Local Food Systems Program Coordinator before finishing the fellowship time period.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups and through mass media and social media.
- Ability to independently research concepts and summarize findings.
- Possess computer skills including email, internet, and Microsoft Office Programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.
- Experience working with diverse audiences.
- Experience with local food system work.
Other Requirements:
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
