Candidate must be a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Sanitarian to be considered for the Environmental Health Specialist II salary range.
GENERAL SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to conduct inspections to license/permit food establishments, wells, septic systems, body art facilities, child/adult care facilities, bathing beaches, campgrounds, and swimming pools to determine compliance with food code, well code, sanitary code, and other standards set by the State of Michigan.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Environmental Health Specialist I
- Performs inspections, issues permits, writes reports, and enforces related codes and safety regulations for public venues.
- Conducts plan reviews and inspects fixed facility, temporary, special transitory, and mobile food establishments to ensure compliance with applicable code standards.
- Enforces hygiene and safety regulations of public recreational water facilities, including pools, spas, and beaches.
- Samples, tests, and inspects private and public water systems; performs soil analysis and permits/inspects on-site sewage treatment systems; drafts corresponding reports and enforces corrective actions.
- Conducts inspections and enforces regulations for body art facilities to ensure safety, cleanliness, and bloodborne illness prevention.
- Performs environmental health inspections of child and adult care facilities, including food service, buildings, drinking water systems, septic systems, and outdoor recreation areas.
- Responds to and investigates housing complaints and other issues; condemns dwellings.
- Engages with community members to address environmental and health issues, such as trash, drug contamination, mold, and bedbug activity.
- Performs related work as required.
Environmental Health Specialist II
- Performs inspections, issues permits, writes reports, and enforces related codes and safety regulations.
- Conducts plan reviews of fixed facility, temporary, special transitory, and mobile food establishments to ensure compliance with applicable code standards.
- Conducts plan reviews of new or replacement commercial septic systems and subdivision plats to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Enforces hygiene and safety regulations of public recreational water facilities, including pools, spas, and beaches.
- Conducts inspections and enforces regulations for body art facilities to ensure safety, cleanliness, and bloodborne illness prevention.
- Performs environmental health inspections of child and adult care facilities, including food service, buildings, drinking water systems, septic systems, and outdoor recreation areas.
- Serves as the standardized trainer for the food program; completes quality assurance of reports and field evaluations; delivers training to new staff members; participates in regulatory training.
- Completes Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) reviews; determines compliance with appropriate code standards.
- Samples, tests, and inspects public water systems; performs soil analysis and permits and inspects on-site sewage treatment systems; drafts corresponding reports and enforces corrective actions.
- Responds to and investigates housing complaints and other issues; condemns dwellings.
- Engages with community members to address environmental and health issues, such as trash, drug contamination, mold, and bedbug activity.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Environmental Health Specialist I
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Environmental Health, or a related field
- 1 to 3 years of related work experience in public health inspections, public relations, and environmental services
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
- None
Environmental Health Specialist II
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Environmental Health, or a related field
- 3 to 5 years of related work experience in public health inspections, regulatory procedures, and food safety auditing
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Sanitarian
