Role Description:
The Facilities Technician plays a key role in maintaining the Kalamazoo Nature Center’s welcoming and well-kept environment. With a focus on cleaning, groundskeeping, and arranging spaces for programs, events, and rentals. This position ensures that KNC’s facilities and outdoor areas are safe, clean, and ready for visitors. The Facilities Technician is also responsible for opening and closing the buildings and grounds, serving as a trusted presence to ensure daily operations start and end smoothly. This role supports a wide range of activities that help connect people with nature.
Duties:
- Open and close KNC facilities and grounds following established procedures.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, floors, windows, and high-touch surfaces in all visitor and staff areas.
- Perform routine grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, raking, snow removal, and leaf blowing.
- Support setup and teardown for programs, events, and rentals, including moving tables, chairs, and equipment.
- Travel to offsite KNC locations, such as Nature’s Way Preschool and Heronwood Field Station, to complete cleaning and light maintenance as needed.
- Operate and maintain tools and equipment such as chainsaws, tractors, snow plows, mowers, and utility vehicles.
- Conduct regular inspections of indoor and outdoor spaces to ensure cleanliness, safety, and functionality.
- Provide light support with troubleshooting building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) as needed.
- Support volunteer projects related to facility or grounds upkeep.
- Participate in on-call emergency response rotations.
- Perform other duties in support of KNC’s mission and operational needs.
Qualifications:
- Ability to operate and maintain small machinery and power equipment (e.g., mowers, tractors, snowplows).
- Experience working in a support role for events, programs, or facilities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Friendly, professional demeanor with a customer service mindset.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured under KNC’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check.
Physical Factors/Working Conditions:
- Able to work weekends and evenings; able to work occasional holidays.
- Ability to respond to on-call emergencies within an hour.
- Ability to climb and work from ladders.
- Able to work indoors and outdoors in rough terrain and in adverse conditions.
- The ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly, stand and walk for long periods of time, reach, bend, kneel and squat.
