Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Lead library assistant, library aides provide direct and indirect services to library patrons, through the collection, check-in and shelving of library materials and work on the customer service desk.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Greets and assists patrons throughout the entire library, assessing patron needs and referring to appropriate staff as needed.
- Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, myKPL, Prism, and library newsletters. Contributes content as appropriate.
- Places items in correct location on library carts, shelves, displays or other designated areas.
- Maintains established shelving quota and periodically performs shelf reading.
- Corrects shelving errors as discovered.
- Checks in returned materials accurately and efficiently using the library’s automated system.
- Reviews returned materials for completeness and condition.
- Resolves exceptions according to established practices and procedures.
- Regularly empties book drops and bins according to established schedule or as directed.
- Provides direct patron service at customer service desk; registers new patrons, responds to general inquiries and complaints, assists in the location of materials, responds to basic reference and reader advisory questions; instructs patrons in the use of all library resources.
- Supports the application of library policies using an inclusive professional approach and alerts appropriate staff members or security for assistance when needed. Completes incident reports accurately and promptly.
- Maintains efficient workroom order.
- Assists with shifting materials as assigned.
- Assists with programs and outreach; including set-up, clean up, staffing stations and providing general assistance as assigned.

Physical demands and work environment
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to move within workspaces and patron areas of the library. This position requires frequent positioning of self to collect and shelve materials from bins and carts onto library shelving and displays. Occasionally requires maintaining stationary position for desk work. Frequent movement of material loads up to 25 lbs with occasional loads up to 50 and ability to move book carts weighing up to 100 lbs. Frequent use of computer. Must be able to distinguish material and classification details at close range. Must be able to communicate effectively.
Work environment: Work will be performed in public and office spaces within the library and in the communities served. Some work and local travel outside the library maybe required for curbside service and outdoor events While performing the duties of this job outside of the library environment, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is generally low to moderate.
Schedule
Tuesdays 12:30 - 6 pm
Wednesdays 3-8 pm
Fridays 1-5 pm
Every 3rd Saturday (1 on, 2 off) 9:30 am – 2 pm
Salary
$14.40 an hour; $13.10 for probationary employees
