Are you a highly skilled and knowledgeable automotive technician? Would like to help develop a new generation of service technicians in a classroom and lab setting? If so, then Kalamazoo Valley Community College may have the ideal part-time opportunity for you.
Kalamazoo Valley is currently seeing a part-time instructor to teach in our automotive technology lab beginning in the fall semester of 2025. We are looking for someone with extensive transmission rebuild experience who would be prepared to cover both the lecture and lab portions of courses taught. The courses we are seeking an instructor for are:
AUTO 142 Automatic Trans/Axle Repair (Fall Semester 2025). This course focuses on lecture and related laboratory experiences in diagnosis and repair of common automatic transmission/transaxles found on today’s cars and light duty trucks. Theory is supported by complete tear down, inspection, and measurement of an automatic transmission in preparation for overhaul. The students will gain hands-on exposure by utilizing a shop transmission.

- Identify the major internal transmission components
- Identify the major components in a transmission torque converter
- Identify the components in a transmission pump and describe how they provide fluid flow
- Demonstrate the diagnosis and repair of an automatic transmission and transaxle
- Demonstrate the disassembly, inspect and repair of internal transmission components
- Demonstrate the disassembly, inspect and repair of valve body assemblies
- Demonstrate the disassembly, inspect and repair of planetary gear trains
- Interpret the diagnosis and repair torque converter concerns
AUTO 143 Automatic Transmission/Axle (Winter Semester 2026). In this class students will become familiar with the theory of operation, service, diagnosis and repair of automatic transmissions/transaxles found on today’s cars and light duty trucks. Diagnostic equipment will be used to troubleshoot various malfunctions.
Desired Course Outcomes for Students:
- Describe continuously variable transaxle operation
- Demonstrate transmission and transaxle diagnosis
- Demonstrate the diagnosis and repair of an automatic transmission and transaxle
- Demonstrate electronic transmission and transaxle diagnosis and repair
- Demonstrate in-vehicle transmission and transaxle maintenance and repair procedures
- Demonstrate transmission and transaxle removal and replacement procedures
Minimum Qualifications:
- ASE certification.
- At least 5 years of qualified work experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- A degree in automotive technology is preferred.
- Prior teaching experience is preferred.
