Job Responsibilities:

  • The Special Education Transition Specialist assists with (pre)vocation and work experience opportunities for students with disabilities to support high school students IEP transition goals, maintains liaisons with school and community organizations/agencies/businesses, provides information and/or direction to students, and promotes programs for staff, parents, and students.
  • Coordinates activities and programs at KPS High School(s)
  • Coordinates school and community (pre)vocation activities and work programs for the purpose of providing work experience and training for successful post-secondary job placement by assisting high school special education case managers in the implementation of IEP transition goals & objectives and assisting secondary students with disabilities to achieve established IEP transition goals & objectives.
  • Coordinates meeting the diverse needs of students by providing appropriate work environments.
  • Works creatively, cooperatively, and establishes positive relationships with colleagues as well as parents/guardians of students.
  • Evaluates students and employers for the purpose of ensuring program success by matching job requirements to student skills.
  • Maintains liaisons with employers, community leaders and organizations for the purpose of building resources and expanding program capabilities.
  • Maintains various records, schedules, files, rosters, etc. for the purpose of documenting and/or providing reliable information.
  • Organizes trips to job and/or training sites for the purpose of exposing students to the work environment and/or educational or training programs.
  • Prepares documents (e.g. reports, letters of recommendation, student evaluations, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to staff, students and community, and complying with program requirements.
  • Assists Case Managers facilitate tutoring for students with disabilities in academic and (pre)vocational skills for the purpose of enhancing their readiness for employment.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of the transition and work activities of students with disabilities.
  • Coordinates transportation needs of students participating in work experiences.
  • Coordinates the schedules of para-educators assisting in (pre)vocational and work experiences at school/community sites.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the use and teaching of vocational- related skills, equipment, processes, and activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of IDEA administrative rules and regulations pertaining to the implementation of IEPs, including transition requirements.
  • Skill in the use of technology to enhance instruction and communication.
  • Ability to work as a contributing member of effective teaching teams, coordinating (pre)vocational and job related activities in/across school and community.
  • Skill and ability to direct and supervise para-educators.
  • Work collaboratively with educators, community leaders, and businesses to create and schedule vocational activities, job shadowing, meetings, and events.
  • Flexibility to work independently and collaboratively with others in a variety of situations.
  • Gather, collate, classify, and interpret data related to transition specialist activities.
  • Independent and collaborative problem solving in working with data and others to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Ability to maintain effective professional relationships with staff, students, and parents.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Skill, dedication and aptitude for working with students.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people with a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain student confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain regular and acceptable attendance levels.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • AA or Equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent successful experience supporting high school students with disabilities in postsecondary outcomes.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand on feet for extended periods of time, stoop, bend, lift, and carry items up to 40 pounds.
