Summary: The Secondary Math Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in a range of math courses, fostering student learning and achievement. Key duties include designing engaging lessons and assessments, preparing course materials, and serving as a middle or high school advisor. The role requires close collaboration with administration, instructional coaches, coordinators, and the middle school team. Additionally, the teacher will participate in community-building activities, instructional events, field studies, and professional development as needed and/or directed.
Major Duties: The primary responsibility of the Secondary Math Teacher is to deliver effective instruction to students while ensuring their guidance, discipline, welfare, and safety. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Planning for Student Success: Design lessons and activities based on the assessed needs of individual students, using data to evaluate current knowledge, skills, and progress.
- Building Relationships: Demonstrate empathy, rapport, and active listening while fostering collaboration with colleagues and support staff to address student needs effectively.
- Lesson Planning and Instruction: Develop and deliver lessons aligned with professional best practices, including clear objectives, assessments, and strategies for re-teaching when needed.
- Grading and Communication: Provide meaningful and timely grading and feedback to students, parents, and colleagues, ensuring clarity and transparency to support student progress and collaboration.
- Active Participation: Engage in faculty, grade-level, or department meetings and contribute to the planning, budgeting, implementation, and evaluation of school programs in alignment with the school’s vision and policies.
- Monitoring Student Well-Being: Stay alert to signs of student challenges, including bullying, harassment, depression, academic struggles, or other concerns, and promptly report concerns to an administrator or designated staff member.
- Supporting Student Accommodations: Work to identify and meet the needs of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 accommodation plans, ensuring compliance with legal and school requirements.
- Professional Growth: Develop and maintain a professional growth plan, reviewing progress annually with an administrator to ensure continuous improvement.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mathematics, Education, and/or a related field (i.e. Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.)
- Successful student teaching, intern teaching, or past experience.
- Ability to effectively communicate with parents, students, and staff verbally and in writing.
- Commitment to collaboration and teaming.
- Ability to maintain acceptable student behavior.
- Ability to use appropriate assessment, instruction, and evaluation techniques.
- Ability to utilize effective practices to build a community of learners.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development and ability to apply that knowledge to the selection and application of curriculum materials and instructional practices.
- Knowledge of skills and strategies necessary to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Knowledge and skill in culturally responsive teaching and learning.
- Knowledge of the relationships between teaching and learning.
- Skill and ability to utilize technology to aid instruction, assessment and learning.
- Commitment to participate in professional growth opportunities and reflection.
- Reliability in attendance, punctuality, and follow-through.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Hawaii State Teacher’s license is preferred but not mandatory.
- Successful completion of a teacher certification program at an accredited college or university.
- Successful completion of highly qualified (“HQ”) criteria including praxis requirements for subject area(s) taught.
- A minimum of three years of experience teaching a wide range of middle and/or upper school Math courses.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
