Position Overview:
The Conservation Planner will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive conservation plans for private landowners, public lands, and agricultural producers in Minnesota. This role involves collaboration with stakeholders, conducting field assessments, and ensuring compliance with state and federal conservation programs, including those of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The planner will also have job approval authority, ensuring that all plans meet or exceed relevant standards and guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement site-specific conservation plans in collaboration with landowners, farmers, and public agencies, ensuring alignment with state and federal regulations, including NRCS guidelines.
- Conduct field assessments and evaluations to identify resource concerns and determine appropriate conservation practices.
- Utilize geographic information systems (GIS) and other technical tools to map and analyze land characteristics, soil health, water resources, and habitat quality.
- Work closely with the NRCS, state agencies, and other partners to secure funding and program support for conservation initiatives.
- Provide technical assistance and training to landowners and stakeholders on conservation practices, sustainable land use, and resource management.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of conservation plans and practices, making adjustments as necessary to meet project goals and compliance standards.
- Prepare detailed reports, grant applications, and project proposals to support conservation planning efforts.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state and federal conservation programs, policies, and best practices.
- Maintain necessary certifications to perform job functions and work in compliance with Minnesota state laws and NRCS standards.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, or a related field or experience can substitute for education.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in conservation planning, natural resources management, or a related field.
- Certification to work as a Conservation Planner in the state of Minnesota and with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
- Job approval authority with demonstrated experience in developing, reviewing, and approving conservation plans and designs.
- Strong understanding of Minnesota’s ecosystems, agricultural practices, and conservation challenges.
- Proficiency in GIS, conservation planning software, and other relevant technical tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout Minnesota for fieldwork and meetings.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds on occasion.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a related field.
- Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) or other relevant professional certifications.
- Experience working with local, state, and federal conservation programs such as the 1W1P, state cost share, Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), or the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) among others.
