Description
Public Safety officers are non-sworn, uniformed Public Safety employees working primarily on campus during non-operational hours, as well as when coverage is needed for special events. They will maintain security and safety of people and property in assigned area(s) of college facilities via foot and mobile patrol, enforcing college rules and regulations.
Examples of Duties
A. Patrols an assigned area in car, or on foot.
B. Answers calls for protection of life and private property and the enforcement of Campus, City, County and State Laws.
C. Responds to all emergencies during assigned duty shift. Administers first aid, performs CPR, and applies AED as necessary.
D. Directs traffic, including regulation of vehicle flow at emergency or congested places; stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws.
E. Collects and presents evidence using scientific identification techniques.
F. Testifies in court in connection with criminal prosecution, may serve warrants and subpoenas.
G. Gives information and directions to the public.
H. May operate equipment to dispatch officers on patrol.
I. Performs a variety of public safety work such as assisting at fires, campus events, and crowd control.
J. May serve as an escort for students, employees, and visitors as requested.
K. Works special events such as Fourth of July, sporting events and other college approved events.
L. Prepares, writes and files daily activity reports with superior officer.
M. Responds to medical calls.
N. Assists with evacuations (fire/weather etc.).
O. Assists campus police during special events or when additional coverage is needed, such as the beginning of each semester when students are buying textbooks, or during Bookstore Buyback, or with commencement and July 4 events.
P. Manages any unauthorized visitors on campus.
Q. Checks college vehicles in and out (inspections) and reports any damages in an incident report, and reports any issues (building, safety, visitors, etc.) to the appropriate individuals.
R. Secures building openings and closings as per assignment.
S. Maintains discipline and adherence to all Public Safety and College rules and regulations, orders, directives, and policies.
T. Demonstrates commitment to uphold and support the Kankakee Community College Mission Statement and College Values.
U. Maintains a neat appearance and be well groomed at all times.
V. Performs related duties as required.
W. Responds to the functions of the position in an environmental setting which might include cold, heat, odor, dampness, dirt, fumes, dust, oil, grease, noise, or vibration on a frequent basis. Appropriate protective devices are available as required.
Minimum Qualifications
A. High School Diploma or GED Equivalent is required.
B. At least two years of prior experience is required.
C. Must be 21 years of age or older, and authorized to work in the United States.
D. Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license, and a valid PERC (Permanent Employment Registration Card).
E. Must be able to walk eight hours per day and assist in evacuating non-ambulatory persons in an emergency.
F. Must have the ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action.
G. Must have the ability to use good discretion and deal courteously but firmly with the general public.
H. Must have strong oral and written communication skills.
I. Must be available and have the ability to work varying shift assignments which may include day, evening, midnight, weekends, and holiday responsibilities.
J. Must maintain AED/CPR certification.
K. Position requires visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or equipment.
L. Ability to work in conditions that include exposure to extreme weather, intense physical activity, combat with armed and or/dangerous persons, individuals with contagious diseases, and safety hazards associated with emergency driving and traffic control.
M. Must be able to pass medical, and drug screening tests.
N. Ability to learn the geography of KCC and the City of Kankakee.
O. Ability to learn police radio broadcasting and communication procedures.
P. Must have the ability to interpret laws and policies.
Q. Must have the ability to work in conditions that include exposure to extreme weather, intense physical activity, combat with armed and or/dangerous persons, individuals with contagious diseases, and safety hazards associated with emergency driving and traffic control.
R. Must be able to participate in a minimum of 20 hours of in-service training per year.
Supplemental Information
- Two shifts available:
2nd Shift: 3 pm - 11 pm, weekends, holidays and campus closures
- Days worked may vary
- working 10-20 hours per week, up to 29 hours.
Hourly Rate of Pay begins at $16.36/hr and may increase with experience and education.
