Are you ready to embark on a unique journey that brings the library into the community? The Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) is seeking a dynamic individual to join our team as a Mobile Library Associate.
No CDL? No Problem!
We'll provide Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training for the right candidate. Once you're ready, you'll take the wheel of our Mobile Library Bus, bringing the library to locations across Wyandotte County!
As a Mobile Library Associate, you'll be:
- A literary ambassador, creating a warm and welcoming environment for all patrons.
- A tech-savvy problem solver, assisting with computer issues and circulation duties.
- A creative programmer, planning and implementing engaging activities for our community.
- A skilled multitasker, managing the mobile library's collection and services.
Other duties:
- Drives the Mobile Library Bus to and from stops following a route schedule.
- Working on a small team, creates a warm and welcoming environment on the mobile library bus.
- Utilizes exceptional customer services skills to assist patrons with readers’ advisory, technology, and reference questions.
- Monitors and cares for the mobile library bus, including adding gasoline, setup before shifts, closing after shifts, and basic troubleshooting.
- Develops and presents programming for children, teens, and adults.
- Provides information, resources, and services to underserved and at-risk populations through outreach.
- Handles circulation and public service desk tasks such as checking items in and out, registering new patrons, and resolving account issues.
- Prepares, monitors, and maintains the mobile library collection, making selection and de-selection decisions.
- Gathers statistics and builds reports to inform the mobile library’s strategic direction.
- Generates social media content promoting the mobile library and library services in general.
- Troubleshoots staff and patron computer issues while offsite.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree or a mix of education/experience required, with professional work experience in a public service setting preferred.
- Must already have or be able to obtain a Class B CDL with passenger, airbrakes, and school bus endorsements.
- Intermediate computer competency and typing skills including internet and email, word processing, graphics and multimedia, and spreadsheets and databases.
- Experience having decision-making authority.
- Able to resolve problems, including bus maintenance issues, without a supervisor present.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Able to communicate clearly and effectively to patrons and staff.
- Able to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Must understand and be willing to fulfill Kansas City, Kansas Public Library mission, procedures and policies.
- Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to provide own transportation to and from locations or other metropolitan wide systems.
- Employees must pass a background check.

Pay: $20.80 - $25.72 per hour
