Salary: $90,000-$110,000/Annually

Position Overview:
Kansas City Pet Project is a large open-admission shelter with an annual intake of 16,000 animals and a live release rate exceeding 90%. Our excellent veterinary staff works together as a team to provide emergency and critical care for injured stray animals, to sterilize all animals after stray hold, to provide more comprehensive medical and surgical care when needed, and to manage the health of our shelter and foster care population. You will work with three seasoned staff veterinarians, our excellent relief vets, and a support staff of 14 dedicated veterinary assistants and technicians. Our veterinarians collaborate with each other on a daily basis and enjoy mentoring, so new grads are welcome! Staff veterinarians report to the Medical Director and will have a variety of responsibilities including population rounds, the care of sick and injured animals, spay and neuter surgeries, and other surgeries as needed. This list is not all inclusive, as we constantly look for ways to better help the people and pets of Kansas City. There are no on-call shifts.

Daily duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Perform high-volume, high-quality, spay/neuter surgeries
  • Perform additional surgeries as needed, e.g. FHO, amputations, enucleations, etc.
  • Triage and provide care to emergent patients that arrive as strays
  • Monitor the daily health of shelter animals
  • Examine and provide treatment plans as needed for animals in shelter and foster
  • Provide direction to medical support staff
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Must hold a current Missouri Veterinary License or provisional license, or
  • be qualified and able to obtain such license prior to start date
  • Must be qualified & eligible to obtain a BNDD license
  • Must use or be willing to learn fear-free handling methods and become Fear Free Certified within 60 days of hire
  • Must be knowledgeable about shelter medicine and spay & neuter best practices, or be willing to learn
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective decision making and diagnostic skills
Working Conditions:
Ability to be on feet for up to 12 hours a day. Ability to kneel, squat or bend repeatedly throughout the workday. Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, high noise levels, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects. Must be able to manage and navigate the emotional aspects of animal welfare.
