Job Purpose:
The role of Bilingual Canine Adoptions Counselor is responsible for facilitating adoptions, customer service, cash handling, and matchmaking to help dogs find new families in both English and Spanish. They are responsible for providing and maintaining excellent customer service at our KC Campus for Animal Care, working as a team with other staff members and volunteers.
Daily Duties and Responsibilities:
- Represent KC Pet Project in a professional, polite, and enthusiastic manner.
- Provide welcoming service by greeting and assisting guests, and responding to guest inquiries to ensure excellent levels of customer service are maintained at all times, including in-person and telephone guest service. Promote repeat business and word-of-mouth advertising through the building of excellent customer relations.
- Conduct canine adoption discussions and assists/educates new adopters on topics such as basic animal behavior, training methods, vaccinations, microchips and other medical information and paperwork that needs to be covered with adopters. Perform virtual adoptions as needed.
- Organize and maintain all materials necessary for adoptions of animals, including but not limited to applications, contracts, vaccination and rabies certificates, office supplies, and educational and promotional materials. Complete animal adoptions, ensuring all transaction paperwork and computer records are complete and accurate in PetPoint, and schedules animals for veterinary appointments as needed.
- Act as matchmaker to help potential adopters identify dogs they’d like to meet.
- Maintain the animal inventory in Airtable.
- Responsible for daily cash handling, credit card transactions, solicits tax deductible financial donations from guests and assists with acknowledging and putting away in-kind donations.
- Must be able to engage politely and meaningfully with volunteers and to ensure a positive and welcoming environment. Willingness to teach and to mentor volunteers to ensure their success in meeting the department’s needs.
- Adheres to all KCPP organizational and departmental policies and procedures, and to all local and state requirements, including but not limited to OSHA, Department of Agriculture, Animal Services Division, etc.
- Communicates regularly with their manager about departmental issues and actively contributes to problem solving.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Must be able to maintain confidentiality and must be able to convey a positive and professional image to the public and employees.
- Must be able to report to work at the scheduled time; ensure the department is ready to open on time each day, can be depended on to complete work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious about assignments.
- Basic Computer Literacy (Microsoft Office, ability to learn PetPoint Database system and AirTable, etc.)
Working Conditions:
Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, high noise levels, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects. Must be able to lift up to 50 lb., sustain long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching and animal handling and restraint for various activity levels of animals in an animal shelter-type setting. Must be able to effectively manage and navigate the emotional aspects of animal welfare.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of experience in a customer service position is required.
- Any combination of training and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary for this position.
- Full-time, 40 hours a week, including one weekend day. Some holidays are required.
