Job Title: Urban Youth Academy-Youth Baseball & Softball Coach (Seasonal)
Job Summary: The Kansas City Urban Youth Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission to empower Kansas City’s urban youth to unlock their potential and become the leaders of tomorrow through baseball and softball.
This position is housed at the Urban Youth Academy (UYA) and is responsible for executing sports-based youth development programs to teach the game of baseball and softball, while providing holistic learning for youth ages 5-18. This position will provide baseball and softball instruction and training in the areas of hitting, pitching, fielding, base running, and game knowledge throughout the year, including summer skills camps.
Position Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
- Provide Instruction: Deliver baseball and softball coaching during scheduled programs and events at the UYA.
- Communication: Maintain clear and positive interactions with players, parents, coaching staff, and officials.
- Safety and Emergency Protocols: Ensure all safety protocols are followed during coaching activities, regularly inspect fields and equipment to maintain a safe environment for practices and games, and be familiar with and able to execute emergency procedures if necessary.
- Teach Fundamentals: Facilitate practices to teach the basics of baseball and softball, helping youth participants develop life skills, knowledge, and techniques.
- Implement Practice Plans: The Director will design the practice sessions, and the coaches will carry them out to improve individual skills, team unity, and essential life skills.
- Motivate and Evaluate: Instruct and motivate participants aged 5-18, evaluate their skills, and provide constructive feedback for improvement.
- Game Strategy: Develop and implement game strategies and tactics to maximize team performance.
- Assist with Programming: Support additional programs such as clinics, team try-outs, practices, and MLB development series.
- Event Coordination: Help organize and coordinate athletic events at the UYA.
- Recruitment: Collaborate to recruit participants for programming.
- Professionalism: Model and display professionalism in appearance, customer service, and coaching behavior
- Representation: Always represent the Royals and the UYA positively and professionally.
- Flexible Schedule: Be available to work evenings and weekends.
- Training and Meetings: Attend training sessions, meetings, and special initiatives as requested by the UYA or Royals organization
- Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned, such as setting up and retrieving equipment before and after programming.
Position Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required:
· Prior experience in youth development is preferred.
· High school diploma required.
· Must be 18 years old.
· Experience and knowledge of youth baseball and/or softball programs are preferred.
· Ability to lead and instruct a group of youth in field settings.
· Demonstrated experience and emotional commitment to working with youth and families in urban community.
· Dedication to achieving the UYA's goals for participants, staff, and the community.
· Embody the qualities of a strong role model for the UYA’s participants.
· Minimum physical requirements: able to gain access to various areas of the UYA for prolonged periods during events; able to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
· Strong organizational and time management skills.
· Maintain a high level of discretion and professionalism.
· Present a professional image and demeanor.
· Uphold core values such as work ethic, leadership, responsibility, accountability, and moral principles to help youth achieve success.
· Current CPR certification required.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to lift items weighing as much as 30 pounds
· Must be able to be productive in a work environment where the noise level can be high at times
· Must be comfortable walking to navigate the facility to access the office, etc.
· Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends as required by deadlines and event scheduling
