The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a CLIA Surveyor opening in Topeka. The Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories is seeking a qualified laboratory surveyor to evaluate clinical laboratories across the state of Kansas.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulates all clinical laboratory testing. The objective of the CLIA program is to ensure quality laboratory testing. KDHE is partnered with CMS to ensure quality clinical laboratory testing throughout the state of Kansas.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a CLIA Surveyor opening in Topeka. The Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories is seeking a qualified laboratory surveyor to evaluate clinical laboratories across the state of Kansas.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulates all clinical laboratory testing. The objective of the CLIA program is to ensure quality laboratory testing. KDHE is partnered with CMS to ensure quality clinical laboratory testing throughout the state of Kansas.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Conducts evaluations (on-site and/or desk review) of clinical laboratories seeking CLIA certification
- Evaluates personnel, facilities, instruments, reagents, quality control, laboratory procedures, laboratory management, and laboratory quality systems to determine compliance with CLIA regulations.
- Prepares appropriate administrative and investigative reports and forms required by the CMS
- Develops accurate, well-organized documentation of observations and factual information obtained on surveys followed by preparation and transmission to the laboratory a statement of deficiencies
- Consults with laboratories to aid in the resolution and corrections of any problems cited.
- Makes timely recommendations to the state agency whether or not certification or licensure is in order.
- Investigates complaints
- Conducts appropriate follow-up to the laboratory surveys
- Monitors laboratory responses to assure timely and relevant actions are taken by laboratories
- Performs on-going review of proficiency testing performance of CLIA certified laboratories
- Keeps current with regulatory and technological changes
- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or other related fields or an associate's degree in medical technology.
- Licensing & Certification:
- Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
- Board Certification from ASCP or equivalent or meets the requirements to sit for a board certification test for medical technologist/medical laboratory scientist or medical laboratory technician.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in medical technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or other related fields or an associate's degree in medical technology.
- Board Certification from ASCP or equivalent or meets the requirements to sit for a board certification test for medical technologist/medical laboratory scientist or medical laboratory technician.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program.
- Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
- Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
- This position is identified as tier 1 where the employee enters healthcare facilities to carry out essential functions. As a tier 1 position, the employee must receive the Influenza Vaccination and provide proof to Human Resources annually.
- Complete a CMS-developed Basic Surveyor Training Course. Completion is expected to be within 3-6 months of hire. Currently this is an on-line training process. This training is required by the Centers for Medicaid Services (CMS) in order to qualify to become a CLIA surveyor.
- Within 12 months of hire, incumbent is required to pass a Federal Monitoring Survey (FMS).
