The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking an Inorganic Chemistry Lab Intern to join our Internship Program in the Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories located in Topeka for the Summer of 2025.
This intern will perform technical and routine tasks following KDHE standard operating procedures (SOPs) and EPA methods. This position will provide support to the Inorganic Chemistry Unit to prepare water samples for preservation and routine testing to meet EPA requirements. This intern will also assist in determining the overall quality of recreational bodies of water throughout the state of Kansas in compliance with the Federal Clean Water Act. Responsibilities include sample set-up, preparation, testing and disposal, operating and maintaining basic laboratory equipment. Intern will also provide assistance to Organic Chemistry and Environmental Micro Units.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
The intern will aid the Inorganic Chemistry unit during the summer months due to increase number of samples to be analyzed. There are 1000 public water supplies that use KDHE for compliance monitoring. The intern with help analyze samples from these systems; as well as testing surface waters throughout the state of Kansas in compliance with the Federal Clean Water Act. Public Water systems are collecting source water samples to monitor for the presence of metals or toxins including lead and copper.

- Receiving, shipping, and testing water samples on a daily basis
- Perform regular lab maintenance lab checks
- Assist with sample preservation and sample prep
- Sample disposal and acid neutralization
- Monitor quality control
Qualifications
- Education:
- High School, GED.
- Licensing & Certification:
- Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- High School, GED.
- Currently enrolled in a college program.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in chemical lab testing.
- Ability to communicate in writing and in personal interactions.
- Ability to follow directions and work independently.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
