Job Title: Certified Histotechnician/Histotechnologist or Non-certified Histotechnician/Histotechnologist.

General Summary: Work involves responsibility for accuracy in preparing, staining and completing special testing as required to assist pathologists in making correct diagnoses. Employees of this class may assist in training lower level technicians and may ensure that work progresses in the absence of a supervisor. Work is performed in accordance with standard laboratory practices. Procedures and technical guidance is made available. Work is performed under the supervision of a pathologist or other qualified medical director.

Immediate Supervisor Title: Pathology Lab Manager

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Receives tissue specimens from qualified source and assures specimens and accompanying documents meet all requirements for testing.
  • Under the supervision of the Medical Director, is able to accurately perform gross examinations for testing and reporting purposes.
  • Performs all testing with a high level of neatness and accuracy. Testing includes routine staining, special staining and immunohistochemistry processes. Proficiency includes use and maintenance of all instrumentation.
  • Become proficient at using anatomic pathology reporting software to accession, track and report results.
  • Become proficient at using eClinicalWorks as it pertains to pathology reporting, billing and coding.
  • Responsible for maintaining and storage of all QC and QA reports, laboratory records and patient slides according to regulatory guidelines.
  • Completes Quality Control on all laboratory equipment and completes appropriate forms.
  • Practices laboratory safety compliance by maintaining order in the laboratory and appropriate disposal of biohazardous waste.
  • Takes periodic inventory of supplies and equipment and prepares requisition forms to replenish depleted supplies
  • Assist in team member training and development.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Education: Associate Arts degree in laboratory science or related area of study, obtained from a regionally accredited institution, may be substituted with years of experience. Must include at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

Experience: Laboratory experience preferred but not required.

PRN employees are expected to work a minimum of one (1) day per month.

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:

1. Knowledge of the principles and procedures of laboratory science.

2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of histological techniques.

3. Knowledge of medical records work procedures.

4. Knowledge of computer applications.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical considerations related to patient information.

Skills:

  • Skill in laboratory manipulative techniques.
  • Skill in dealing with masses of information in organized manner.
  • Skill in using computer and medical records software.

Abilities:

  • Ability to perform assigned tasks according to exactly prescribed procedures and to make accurate observations of results.
  • Special ability required perceiving three-dimensional and geometrical relationships when cutting paraffin blocks and making embedding molds.
  • Ability to schedule time and assignments effectively.

4. Ability to establish and maintain courteous and professional working relationship with other staff and patients.

5. Ability to work on several projects simultaneously.

Work Environment: Position is in a well-lighted office environment. Activities including sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting.

Mental/Physical Requirements:

1. Requires the ability to sit for long periods of time analyzing and interpreting data, calibrating precise instruments, completing written work orders, problem solving, communicating with providers, co-workers and vendors both verbally and in writing.

2. May occasionally be exposed to hazardous working environment with hazardous chemicals and infectious disease.

3. May occasionally lift up to 40 lbs.
