Job Title: MOHS Tech
Department: Dermatology
Immediate Supervisor Title: Clinic Manager
General Summary: Assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Research patient records from other physicians, having relevant information available and/or scanned into the EMR for the office visit.
- Perform and document patient assessment in preparation for physician office exam.
- Assist provider with examination when needed.
- Maintain accurate patient records.
- Set up surgical trays for all procedures.
- Perform patient education.
- Assist with scheduling procedures and tests.
- Assist and perform specialized testing.
- Make phone calls to patients regarding advice, test results, follow up appointments.
- Refill prescriptions with pharmacy as directed by the provider.
- Complete appropriate paperwork and phone call to preauthorize medications and testing.
- Maintain inventory of all medical supplies and medications.
- Assist with phone triage.
- Responsible for accurate documentation.
- Give injections as directed by provider.
- Keep exam rooms neat, clean and well stocked.
- Assist in team member training and development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential MOHS Tech Job Responsibilities (if applicable):
1. Embedding: Orient specimen correctly on embedding device (glass slide, CryoEmbedder, Freeze bar/well, heat extractor, etc.).
2. Freeze specimen to device ensuring that the epidermis / base of specimen is properly placed to ensure a complete representative section. Adhere to prepared object holder disc.
3. Microtomy (Cutting): Operate a microtome within cryostat with correct settings, alignments and knife angles to insure optimum cutting / sectioning of specimen. Verify block orientation for proper facing of specimen. Adequately trim specimen(s) block to correct level of completeness to provide a true first margin of the specimen.
4. Ability to determine and produce acceptable quality representative specimen sections. Accurately places a series of sections on a microscopic slide (labeled with accession # /piece / stage). Correctly labels and stores cut specimen blocks within the cryostat chamber to ensure accurate tissue identification.
5. Selects appropriate stains and chemicals to perform H or T-Blue staining procedures.
6. Prepares and maintains stains and other solutions required in staining. Demonstrate the ability to determine acceptable and unacceptable staining.
7. Maintains/services instruments according to established protocols. Demonstrate the ability to operate or use instruments for intended purpose. Monitors and documents instrument performance and checks/recognizes malfunctions and identifies the need of repair.
8. Assist in general housekeeping duties for Mohs Laboratory.
9. Maintain Mohs laboratory logbook (accession number / date / patient / tumor location / physician). Assists in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment for possible adoption by the laboratory environment.
10. Other duties as assigned.
Education: 18 years of age with a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), Medical Assistant Certification or Current Dermatology Tech Certification, Licensed Practical Nurse Certification. Must complete Dermatology Tech program within one (1) year of hire.
Experience: Three (3.1) to five years of recent experience working in a dermatology facility as a medical assistant and/or years of experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant or CNA or PCT.
Other Requirements: Current CPR certification and current health records with the appropriate immunizations to work in the health care field (hepatitis B and tuberculosis).
PRN employees are expected to work a minimum of one (1) day per month.

Work Environment: Work performed in an outpatient clinic setting with exposure to virus, disease and infection from patients and specimens. Interaction with patients, staff, physicians, pharmacists and other medical facilities.
Mental/Physical Requirements: Frequent walking, sitting, squatting and occasionally lifting up to 30 pounds. Working at a video display terminal for extended periods. Functioning in high stress situations.
