The Medical Lab Assistant is responsible for receiving, accessioning and processing of specimens within the laboratory. He or she receives samples, confirms the integrity of the specimen and other receiving criteria and prepares samples for further processing.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Process lab specimens verifying sample identity and testing requirements are met
- Log specimens into Laboratory Information System (LIS) ensuring accurate demographic and testing request entry
- Prepare and aliquot specimens for testing and facilitate delivery to appropriate laboratory section
- Troubleshoot any specimen related issues
- Perform by aseptic technique the set up and plating of microbiology cultures
- Complete record logs and other administrative duties as assigned
- Follow all Standard Operating Procedures to ensure safety and quality standards
- Participate in process improvements
- Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals
- Participate in data collection efforts within the laboratory
- Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge or skill
- Communicate with coworkers, clients, vendors, and visitors professionally and respectfully
- Ensure a tidy/clean workspace at all times
- Other duties as required and assigned
A Successful Candidate Must Possess:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Relevant laboratory experience strongly preferred but not required.
- Comfortable handling biological specimens
- Ability to follow all policy and procedures
- Good communication skills
