Reports To: Principal/Director of Health Services
Duty Days: 187 Days
Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Grade: IS03
Qualifications:
College hours, high school diploma or GED
Certification as a nurse aide, medical assistant or EMT is preferred
CPR/AED certification and First Aid certification required
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
Ability to use computer
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
Ability to physically transfer students with limited mobility in meeting personal needs
One year experience in health-related position preferred including contact with school-age students
Required training to be completed within 60 days of employment:
- Vision, Hearing, Scoliosis Screening Certification
- Type 2 Diabetes Screening Certification
- Skills training for emergency medication administration
- Stop the Bleed training Computer training for medical documentation
Primary Purpose:
Assist school nurse by assuming routine record keeping activities, providing minor first aid care, and conducting health screenings at campus level. Work under the direct and indirect guidance and direction of a licensed nurse.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Carry out first aid and emergency procedures for ill and injured students as directed by school nurse.
- Carry out specialized health care procedures as trained and directed by school nurse
- Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures; maintain accurate log of medication dispensed.
- Assist with screening activities including measuring height and weight, testing vision and hearing, and examining spinal cord and scalp.
- Escort students to and from clinic and assist students with disabilities as necessary.
- Assist students if needed with toileting issues.
- Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care.
- Keep nurse’s office clean and sanitary.
- Record information on student health records
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required on all students.
- Prepare correspondence, reports, and records using computer.
- Make appointments for and maintain schedule for the school nurse.
- Maintain documentation of health office activities, including reportable accidents, communicable disease data, six week reporting, and referrals to school nurse.
- Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed
- Prepare and arrange bulletin boards, displays, models, etc.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, state and local public health rules, State Board of Education rules, and board policy in health services area.
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
Equipment Used:
Computer, blood pressure monitor, audiometer, glucometer, nebulizer, suction machine, and any other medical equipment necessary for the delivery of specialized health care procedures .
Working Conditions:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable disease. Ability to lift and transport students to facilitate care. Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
