Education
Required: High school diploma
Experience
Preferred: Previous hospital registration, billing and collections, financial counseling, and/or customer service experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Basic computer knowledge.
Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
Knowledge of CPT / ICD-9 coding helpful.
Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
Department Specific Requirements
For rural health clinics: requires Heartsaver AED.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential
Reviews daily IP, ER, Surgery and OP admissions that are Private Pay or other patients in financial need.
Responsible for financially clearing patients at ER, hospital bedside or OP registration to obtain cash payment or determine eligibility for various governmental programs.
Conducts interview with patients and / or family members.
Records and maintains complete documentation of activities performed on accounts.
Notifies hospital case management, social services, admission staff or other applicable areas of case screening determinations and outcomes via verbal and written communications.
Calculates and collects cash payments appropriately for all patients.
Advises self-pay patients of their medical options available in the community for future follow-up care.
Explains hospital regulations, such as visiting hours, payment of accounts, charges, etc.
Participates in data gathering for financial reporting.
Works closely with Case Management (UR) on a daily basis in regards to patient status changes; whether this would include patient type or insurance notification or insurance coverage.
Sets up arrangements / monthly installment plans for patients to payoff balances within the guidelines of KH collection policy.
Assists in registering patients or admitting patients when needed.
Maintains a knowledge base of programs offered by KH such as Financial Assistance. Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Addendum (essential for specific dept)
EXETER HEALTH CLINIC ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Assists patients with completing Medi-cal applications for Health Coverage and Food stamps, housing and food pantries. Follows up on case workers to make sure if all information is received for the process of Medi-cal application. Assists patients in completing Disability forms, referring patients to Advocacy agency for permanent Disability and Social Security. Assists Patient Accounting in obtaining Financial Assistance application. Assists patients with bills from the hospital. Assists with any Out of County changes PCP, Managed Care plan, working with the Ombudsman at the State to do Emergency Disenrollments. Assists if not eligible for Medi-cal , assist in referring them to Covered CA. Assists with Financial help on Medications that patient may get a lower co/pay. Needy Meds, Good RX. Assists in changes of PCP plans from private insurance to find out what out of pockets, deductibles. Assists the Referral departments with TAR’S. Assists in enrolling the patients into the Breast and Cervical programs. Works close with making sure the patient gets all the assists possible for all financial help. Refers them to the American Cancer Society.
SRCC MEDICAL ONCOLOGY SERVICES ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Performs financial counseling process on all patients prior to treatment, which includes outlining and explaining financial obligations and billing process and establishing payment arrangements with the patients as necessary for the planned treatment and or procedures. Timely documents financial counseling process and discussions in the practice management system. Provides coverage for both the Visalia and Hanford locations. Provides back-up for authorizations for both locations. Assists with month end close. Provides support for outstanding patient accounts receivable. Reviews patient chemotherapy protocols and determine insurance benefits and patient financial responsibility. Establishes payment arrangements with the patient and document appropriately in the practice management system. Discusses payment arrangements with patients for outstanding patient balances. Works with pharmaceutical companies and other resources to obtain grants and financial aid for patients in need. Assists appropriate patients and families to explore options for financial assistance for medical services with referral to Social Services when appropriate. Follows up with appropriate patients and families for financial assistance needs. Obtains necessary insurance information for patients and field/answer questions or direct patients to appropriate resources for questions regarding insurance, billing, payment, and/or collection arrangements. Meets with patients to discuss estimated costs of therapies and develop appropriate templates of charges by care regimen to assist patients. Works closely with patients and the Business Office to resolve account balance issues and establish payment plans. Communicates to the treatment team any anticipated issues with coverage that may impact the sequencing and timeliness of care.
