Job Title: Shop Technician

Department: Operations

Job Summary: As a front-line representative of Kayden Industries, the Shop Technician is responsible for the upkeep of   Kayden assets and supplemental equipment. The Shop Technician’s responsibilities consist of, but not limited to, the following.

 

Responsibilities

Include but not limited to:

  • Positively represent Kayden
  • Work within Kayden and client policies and procedures
  • Rig up equipment
  • Maintain and service equipment
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment problems
  • Operate equipment (sit in jobs)
  • Rig out equipment
  • Complete all necessary reports as required
  • Actively communicate with the QHSE Supervisor and other personnel
  • Ensure our clients’ satisfaction
  • Work in Kayden’s shop when necessary
  • Inventory control and upkeep

 

Safety

Maintain appropriate certifications

  • Kayden, clients and regulations all require that safety certificates and tickets are carried at all times.
  • Monitor the expiration of your own certificates and tickets.
  • Notify the QHSE Regional Manager if you need any specific safety training for required certificates or tickets.

Follow all safety standards both on and off our clients’ work sites

  • Read and understand all of Kayden’s Safety policies and procedures.   
  • Be aware of the consequences of not following any policy.
  • Talk with the Safety Manager, Training Manager, or the QHSE Supervisor if you have any questions or concerns.  
  • Openly encourage other colleagues to follow all safety policies and procedures.  
  • Share safety issues with other Field Technicians, the QHSE Supervisor, and the Safety Manager as they arise in real time, regardless of their location. 
  • Attend all safety meetings.
  • Lead by example: demonstrate that you follow each and every safety standard that Kayden and our clients have established.

Complete JSAs accurately and in a timely manner

  • Complete, review, and sign JSAs for the tasks you are going to perform prior to every job.

All Incident/Accident and Near Miss Reports are to be completed immediately and accurately

  • If there is an incident, accident, or near miss, then contact the Safety Manager immediately.  The Safety Manager will inform you how to proceed and which forms, notes or documents are required.  You must be available to participate in safety investigations as required.

Complete and submit all necessary safety reports in full

  • Conduct all necessary safety meetings (Picker Safety, General Safety, Hazard IDs, etc.) before performing any tasks.
  • All completed documentation must be handed in to the QHSE Supervisor and the Safety Manager in a timely manner.

 

FOLLOW POLICIES & PROCEDURES

 

Be familiar with, understand, and follow all of Kayden’s Policies & Procedures.

  • Read and understand all Kayden’s policies and procedures.  
  • Perform all tasks according to the established procedures.
  • Be aware of the consequences of not following any policy.
  • Talk with the Training Manager or the QHSE Supervisor if you have any questions or concerns about the policies, procedures, or consequences associated with not following them.  
  • Openly encourage other Field Technicians to follow all policies and procedures.  
  • Lead others by following all of Kayden’s policies to set a proper example.

 

 

PRE-JOB ACTIONS

 

Before going to a work site.

  • Obtain the required information about the job, including the type of job and what equipment you will be responsible for.
  • Speak with the QHSE Supervisor and QHSE Regional Manager about the job and any special expectations of you for the job.
  • Do a vehicle inventory to make sure you have all require equipment, parts and replacements needed.  Talk with the Procurement Manager (Calgary), Shop Manager, or the Field Supervisor about which parts you are taking.  Obtain permission to order the needed supplies.

 

 

WORKING IN THE SHOP

 

When you’re not required to be working with rigs, you are required to work in the shop.

  • Follow all Kayden’s regular policies and procedures as well as the shop.
  • Assist in shop duties as directed by the QHSE Supervisor and the QHSE Regional Manager.  These duties include but are not limited to: equipment servicing, cleaning equipment, taking inventory, assisting other shop employees, etc.
  • Assist operational personnel with other needs as required.  These other activities include but are not limited to: making supply runs, calling around for parts, drop off and pick up vehicles, equipment, and personnel, etc.

 

 

SERVICING KAYDEN EQUIPMENT

 

 

Perform maintenance on Kayden equipment.

  • To ensure Kayden’s equipment is able to operate properly and safely, perform the required service at the scheduled intervals.
  • Perform service safety and according to Kayden’s established procedures.
  • Thoroughly inspect the equipment for potential damage or improper use/setup.  Fix any issues immediately.
  • Immediately work to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues prior to the client needing them to be used.  Consult with the QHSE Supervisor, Training Manager, or Operations Coordinator if you are unable to first resolve the issue on your own or with available resources.
  • Report equipment issues with the QHSE Supervisor and the Operations Coordinator.
  • Clean the equipment.
  • Check the onsite inventory for completeness.
  • Complete all required paperwork in full and submit it in a timely manner.  

 

 

ON SITE REPRESENTATION

 

Professionally represent Kayden.

  • As a member of the Kayden team, you must always present a professional and positive attitude and work ethic.  
  • Build positive, professional relationships with all on site personnel including the Drilling Consultant, On Site Representative, Safety Coordinator, Derrick Hands, etc.
  • Take pride in Kayden’s equipment by keeping them clean and all spare parts neatly put away.
  • Show respect for the client’s and third party’s equipment.
  • Show respect for all onsite personnel regardless of their job title.
  • Always clean up after yourself and pick up and properly dispose of the trash you find regardless if it’s yours or not.
  • Keep shacks neat and clean at all times.  Clean any dirt or mess you’ve made in the shacks in a timely manner.

 

 

 

RIGGING UP EQUIPMENT

 

Set up Kayden equipment.

  • Ensure that Kayden equipment is safely unloaded, spotted, rigged up, inspected, and tested prior to the client needing them to perform.
  • Follow all safety and set up procedures.
  • Perform any necessary servicing to the equipment prior to putting it to use.
  • Ensure all startup procedures are followed properly to prevent damage to the equipment.
  • Immediately work to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues prior to the client needing them to be used.  Consult with the QHSE Regional Manager if you are unable to first resolve the issue on your own or with available resources.
  • Report equipment issues with QHSE Supervisor and the Operations Coordinator.

 

Routine 

  • Clean the equipment.
  • Collect the equipment and parts inventory.
  • Complete all required paperwork in full and submit it in a timely manner.

 

OPERATE KAYDEN EQUIPMENT (FOR SIT IN JOBS)

 

Operate Kayden equipment required for the job.         

  • Run the centrifuge appropriately for the drilling program to remove the drill cuttings from the drilling fluid.
  • Run the Barite recovery centrifuge at the appropriate speed to allow the drilling system to maintain the appropriate fluid weight as directed by the On Site Representative, Drilling Consultant, and Mud Engineer.
  • Continually monitor and adjust centrifuge and pump valves to ensure equipment is operating optimally.

 

Equipment monitoring.

  • Regularly inspect all equipment for proper operation, set up, and look for existing or potential damage.
  • Be proactive in ensuring all equipment is running efficiently, safely, and identify any potential issues with the equipment and its setup before they happen.
  • Immediately work to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues prior to the client needing them to be used.  Consult with the QHSE Supervisor, Training Manager, or Operations Coordinator if you are unable to first resolve the issue on your own or with available resources.
  • Report equipment issues with the QHSE Supervisor and the Operations Coordinator.
  • Ensure the Barite Hopper is set up correctly and is at the appropriate height to allow for the receipt and discharge of drilling fluids without spilling fluid.
  • Ensure the Cone Tank is set up correctly and is at the appropriate height to allow for the receipt and discharge of drilling fluids.
  • Check valves on all equipment for appropriate connections to avoid potential leaks.

Communication.

  • Keep the On Site Representative, Drilling Consultant, and the QHSE Supervisor up to date with the equipment’s performance.
  • Immediately communicate any equipment issues with the QHSE Supervisor and work to resolve the issues quickly.
  • Complete all required paperwork in full and submit it in a timely manner (including daily, weekly, and monthly reports).  

 

 

RIGGING OUT

 

Tear down Kayden equipment for transport to the next site.

  • Perform any necessary servicing to the equipment prior to rigging it out.
  • Clean equipment if possible.
  • Follow all safety and rig out procedures.
  • Carefully inspect Kayden equipment for any issues or damage.  Immediately communicate any equipment issues with the QHSE Supervisor and the Operations Coordinator.
  • Collect the equipment and parts inventory.
  • Ensure the equipment is safely loaded and secured.
  • Clean up the job site on and around Kayden’s equipment.   Make sure all trash is disposed of properly.
  • Complete all required paperwork in full and submit it in a timely manner.

 

 

 

MUD SAMPLING AND DATA COLLECTION

 

Perform Mud Checks.

  • Take the mud weight and funnel viscosity from the mud system according to Kayden’s policies and procedures.  
  • Complete the appropriate reports entirely and submit them in a timely manner.  

Drilling Fluid samples to be taken.

  • Collect samples according to Kayden’s procedures.   
  • Collect samples from the appropriate points as designated by Kayden for the job.
  • Complete the appropriate reports entirely and submit everything in a timely manner.  

Oil On Cuttings samples.

  • Collect samples according to Kayden’s procedures.   
  • Collect samples from the appropriate points as designated by Kayden for the job.
  • Complete the appropriate reports entirely and submit them in a timely manner.  

 

 

 

SHIFT COVERAGE

 

Assist other team members as required. 

  • If working rotating shifts, you must remain on duty until your relief shows up and is able to take over.
  • Many times a task will not be completed by the end of your shift within your hitch, be flexible to assist your teammates as you are able and as necessary.
  • Be flexible to cover a teammate’s shift when you’re able and requested by either the Field Supervisor or the Field Coordinator.
