KB Signaling (KBS) has an opening for a Field Service Engineer (FSE). The FSE is an entry level key role in the KB Signaling business and serves to connect KBS customers (internal/external) to technical support experts for KB Signaling products. The FSE’s serve customers in the USA and Canada regions in the transit, short-line, and class-one railroads.

A FSE will work directly with Product Solution Engineers, Product Managers, Account Executives, Customer Service, and Manufacturing to resolve technical product issues and answer product related questions, calls, and emails. In addition, the FSE will travel to customer sites in support of field issues (troubleshooting, installation support, training, and repairs).

An FSE will travel an average of 30% of the time to fulfill their responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

Associate in Electronics or bachelor’s degree in EE, EET, Computer science, Electromechanical engineering

Ability to work individually as well as contribute to a team project

Aptitude and passion for solving complex technical problems

Strong written, verbal, analytical skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office

Flexibility in relocation

Demonstrate ability to work independently in a multi-site, team environment

Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

Like to travel

Specific FSE Responsibilities:


  • Provide technical instruction and assistance both over the phone and in person to customer representatives regarding installation, operation, calibration, repair, and maintenance of railroad equipment installed at customer sites.
  • Perform on-site installation and maintenance support for railroad signaling equipment and systems including equipment setup, equipment calibration, equipment operational verification, equipment troubleshooting, and/or equipment repair.
  • Troubleshoot railroad signaling equipment and systems by leveraging a broad understanding of railroad signaling products and employing fundamental engineering principles.
  • Respond to requests for emergency troubleshooting and issue resolution needs for railroad customers during both normal and non-normal business hours depending on rotational assignments.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable product line warranties and product technical bulletins and effectively advise customers regarding the same.
  • Plan, prepare and/or execute both internal and external training programs as required to impart and perpetuate appropriate levels of product and railroad signaling knowledge.
  • Develop and expand personal technical knowledge and expertise regarding railroad signaling equipment (both new and legacy) and regarding engineering principles to apply in resolving customer issues.
  • Perform a variety of administrative tasks including: writing technical reports, ordering lab/field materials, obtaining vendor quotations, preparing status and trip reports, booking travel arrangements, shipping material, tracking time allocation, managing expense accounts, and organizing FSE area assets, networks, and tools.
  • Operate call systems and issue tracking tools to document customer calls by recording pertinent information efficiently and thoroughly.
  • Provide leadership and technical direction to skilled labor individuals who are performing work on customer sites.
  • Maintain a strong safety mindset to assure all executed work reflects the technical and safety requirements within all customer and Alstom safety standards.
