What are the responsibilities and job description for the Roadway Estimator position at KCI Construction?
Purpose: The Estimator will support the estimating group with the preparation of estimates by reviewing project documents. Estimator will work with Director of Estimating by performing pricing, and bidding of construction projects for civil, highway/roadway, self-performed work and as GC. Extensive knowledge of construction means and methods, costs and construction principles are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurate estimating of projects assigned, completed on time, in a professional and competitive manner, while considering risk factors and construction methods.
- Review and understand all bid documents to determine scope of work and required content of estimate.
- Determine labor, material, and equipment costs.
- Perform detailed quantity take-off and pricing of projects as assigned.
- Solicit subcontractors, and suppliers and monitor responses.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with subcontractors/suppliers, maintaining ethical standards.
- Investigate conditions at the project site prior to bid to understand and evaluate site accessibility, surface and underground conditions and any condition that would affect construction means/methods and costs.
- Attend pre-bid meetings as required.
- Handle the buy-out process.
- Ensure estimating practices are adhering to good faith efforts for MBE/WBE/DBE participation.
- Keep current with latest estimating technology and techniques.
- As required, attend industry events while representing KCI in a professional manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field is preferred.
- 5 years of experience in an estimating role.
- Experience with earthwork, grading, and storm sewers preferred.
- Experience with waterline, sanitary, and concrete paving preferred.
- A high degree of integrity.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Organized, ability to meet deadlines, and attention to detail.
- Must be a self-starter and team player.
- Knowledgeable of construction costs and engineering principles.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, working knowledge in HCSS Heavy Bid a plus.
