Job Summary
This role focuses on leading and coordinating efforts to support English Language Learners by providing instruction, developing programs, and fostering pathways to academic and workforce success. It emphasizes collaboration, student-centered leadership, and alignment with institutional goals.
Job Duties:
Instruction, Course Scheduling, and PT Faculty Recruitment.
- Teach ESL (English as Second Language) courses designed for students preparing for college coursework.
- Schedule ESL courses each term based on student demand and institutional needs. Recruit, mentor, and provide support for adjunct ESL faculty to ensure high-quality instruction.

Program Coordination & Collaboration with Adult Education
- Coordinate services with Gateway’s Adult Education department to develop a clear pathway from ESL to postsecondary programs.
- Work with the Testing Center and Adult Education to maintain and administer the Michigan English Placement Test (M-EPT) to ensure accurate student placement. D
- evelop contextualized instruction that integrate language learning with technical programs (e.g., advanced manufacturing, healthcare, business).
- Ensure compliance with Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and state Adult Education guidelines. Collect and analyze student performance data to track progress between Adult Education, ESL, and credit-bearing courses. Other duties as assigned to support the success and growth of the ELL program,

ELL Student Engagement & Support
- Collaborate with student services personnel to provide ELL student support services, including tutoring, mentoring, and campus engagement opportunities.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for ELL student support and advocacy, ensuring they are fully integrated into the college community.
- Work with faculty across divisions to embed ELL support in technical and general education programs.
Advocate for ELL student success in institutional policies and initiatives. -
Messaging, Recruitment, and Outreach
- Coordinate with Marketing, Admissions, Advising, and Adult Education to develop targeted messaging and recruitment strategies for self-identified ELL students.
- Partner with community organizations and employers to expand ELL enrollment and career transition opportunities.
Conduct outreach initiatives to raise awareness of Gateway’s ELL support services, ESL programs, and career pathways.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Applied Linguistics, Adult Education, or a related field.
- 4 to 6 years of relevant experience.
- Ability to work independently.
- Significant experience teaching various ESL levels and skills, including college-level composition.
- Proven experience and understanding of working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- High attention to detail, independent, self-motivated, adaptable to fast-paced environments.
- Professional and courteous communication at all levels, both internally and externally.
- Clear verbal and written skills.
- Efficiently prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Forms, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Word).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or equivalent TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Applied Linguistics, Adult Education, or a related field.
- Experience in providing comprehensive support services for ELL students, including tutoring and mentoring.
- Understanding of KCTCS and state Adult Education guidelines.
- Experience in and understanding with students from diverse populations.
Experience working at the community college level.
