Job Title : Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Lab Tech (MLT)
Department : Laboratory
Reports To : Director of Laboratory Services
Position Summary : Coordinate and participate in a variety of complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use by physician in diagnosis and treatment of disease. This position may require supervisory skills necessary to teach and provide review for both students and MLTs. Conducts resting and exercise EKGs, reviews results to ensure quality and inspects equipment to ensure appropriate operation. Identifies abnormal EKGs.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-Analytical Lab Testing
Introduce self to patient; patient identification verification; sample collection and phlebotomy, tube selection; patient transfer and appropriate use of transferring aids; instrument start up and maintenance; demonstrates ability to problem solve in the pre-analytical phase; performs periodic continuing education to ensure competency.Analytical Lab Testing
Performs and interprets waived / moderate / high complexity testing in Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Blood Banking and Urinalysis; has working knowledge of abnormal panic values; has working knowledge of reference labs and test they perform; performs instrument calibration and demonstrates ability to evaluate; performs periodic continuing education to ensure competency; demonstrates the ability to problem solve waives / moderate / high complexity testing; performs instrument repair and troubleshooting under supervision from tech support; performs instrument controls according to Westgard Rules and demonstrates ability to evaluate.Post-Analytical Lab Testing
Demonstrates understanding of results, ie need for repeats, trends, shifts, etc. ; demonstrates understanding of record retention and retrieval; demonstrates ability to charge for services timely and accurately; demonstrates ability to problem solve in post analytical phase; performs periodic continuing education to ensure competency; demonstrates working knowledge of quality assurance and participates in assigned activities; demonstrates working knowledge of test linearities and participates in assigned activities; demonstrates knowledge of proficiency testing and participates in assigned activities; demonstrates supervisory and instructional skills to co-workers or students on new and existing methods used in the lab; demonstrates the ability to act as a resource for questions concerning lab procedures and practices.EKG Tech
Performs routine use and operation of EKG machine successfully; recognizes normal and abnormal results; demonstrates charting practices and record retention / retrieval; performs periodic continuing education to ensure competency.General Requirements :

Education and / or Experience :
Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or an Associate's Degree in Medical Lab TechnicianCertificates, Licensure, Registrations :
Currently registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a Medical Lab Technician (MLT) in the State of NebraskaBasic Life Support (BLS)Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively to maintain good working relationships with staff, healthcare providers, and patientsMust be capable of communicating clearly (reading, writing and speaking) in the English Language.Must be proficient in the operation of a personal computer with Microsoft Office and the InternetMust be capable of reading and comprehending complex healthcare laws and regulations.
