Description

Prepare programs and develop machining methods and fixtures to run production of new jobs. Responsible for set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

  • Using appropriate software, you are responsible for writing programs in Mastercam, and other programming languages. In some cases, programming may be done at the machine tool.
  • Manage the successful transition of new products onto the production floor.
  • Assist in preparing quotes.
  • Participate in engineering design reviews.
  • Evaluate and approve drawings, routings, specs and other documents for production.
  • Design and procure tools/fixtures/ancillary equipment.
  • Evaluate parts for feasibility to process on existing equipment.
  • Perform process development and assist in documentation of manufacturing work instructions.
  • Perform prototyping activities as part of new product development.
  • Evaluate and solve program based production problems. .
  • Support ISO 9001:2015 initiatives.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and veneer calipers.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts.
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Check workpieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled.
  • Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  • Position and fasten workpieces.
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
  • Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment in order to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.
  • Program computers and electronic instruments such as numerically controlled machine tools.
  • Set controls to regulate machining, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel in order to exchange technical information.
  • Confer with numerical control programmers in order to check and ensure that new programs or machinery will function properly, and that output will meet specifications.
  • Prepare working sketches for the illustration of product appearance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of programming experience in a machining production setting preferred
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be able to use solid model software in the process of developing programs and methods
  • Must have knowledge of machining and assembly practices, consumable tools and fixturing, including 5 axis machining applications.
  • Ability to work with vendors, customers, and employees.
  • Must excel at working in a team environment.
  • Must be familiar with machining methods and tooling selection for various types of parts.
  • Must have working knowledge of production scheduling and shop operations.
  • This position requires that the person be a highly organized individual, who is self-motivated, and can work independently.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and or priorities and easily adapt to changing situations.
  • Will be computer literate, particularly in shop floor control, production planning, and inventory control applications.
  • Estimating experience using SigmaNest or similar software is a plus.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

Requires ten (10) years related experience in production machining; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk, occasionally stoop, kneel and/or climb; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. Ability to identify colors and make fine visual discrimination; ability to make fine judgment of texture. Ability to remember verbal and written instructions over a period of a few minutes to several days.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Exposure is frequent to moving mechanical parts, airborne particles - eye protection is required, and fumes, machine vibration, and noisy conditions, high temperatures, and occasional to a restricted space work area.
