Job Summary
Primary Function: Provide an individualized, functional educational program based on assessment of individual students for a class of developmentally disabled students.
Secondary Function: Help parents to understand the problems of the severely handicapped student and how to cope with these problems.
Qualifications: Possess a credential or credentials appropriate to perform the assigned tasks. Possess the ability to work effectively with children, school personnel, and community agency personnel.
Directly Responsible To: Elementary School Principal and Director of Special Education.
Immediate Subordinates: Special Education Aides
Responsibilities:
Possess an Education Specialist teaching credential, moderate/severe or ESN (or meet the qualifications for an ed. spec. permit), as well as an EL authorization. Position may require some lifting. Possess the ability to work positively and effectively with students, families, school personnel, and other community agencies.Comments and Other Information

Responsibilities:
- Assists the Child Study / I.E.P. Team with pupil assessment, individualized instructional plan design, implementation, and progress monitoring for each pupil.
- Instructs pupils assigned, using special techniques, equipment, materials, and related services as specified in the instructional plan.
- Prepares specialized materials and devices used in working with the handicapped pupils.
- Provides motivation, through a constantly varying approach, to pupils who have a short attention span and who have extreme difficulty in working independently.
- Teaches functional skills which may not normally be taught in the regular classroom. This shall include student involvement in community settings as appropriate.
- Develop perceptual abilities such as tactile/thermal, auditory, visual, olfactory, and taste. Expose the pupil to as many sensory stimulations as possible to enable him to know and trust the world in which he lives.
- Develop a good self-concept and at the highest level possible, develop a concern for others. Self awareness of interpersonal skills shall be an integral component of all activities.
- Develop locomotion through gross and fine motor developments and spatial awareness of self and body. Self help in the areas of grooming and hygiene shall be stressed.
- Facilitates the pupil's integration into home life and further educations.
