The Patrol Division of the Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the full time position of Patrol Deputy.

JOB PURPOSE:

Protects citizens Constitutional rights and prevents crime; enforces laws; apprehends suspects; monitors traffic in a designated area of Kennebec County.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Possess a valid Driver’s license.
  • To understand and work within Kennebec County Government Policies and Procedures and the Polices and Procedures of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
  • To work collaboratively as a member of a team with various groups of staff depending on the issue addressed.
  • To accept shared responsibility with other team members to successfully accomplish goal of each team that he or she is a member.
  • To assure quality in work performed in order to facilitate the delivery of quality services.
  • Maintain confidence and protect County by keeping information concerning clients and County Operations confidential.

KEY EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • Prevents crime by explaining and enforcing applicable federal, state, county, and local laws and ordinances; teaching preventative, protective, and defensive tactics; mediating disputes; patrolling assigned area; responding to notices of disturbances; conducting searches; observing suspicious activities; detaining suspects.


  • Apprehends suspects by responding to complaints and calls for help; observing violations; investigating crimes and making arrests.


  • Conducts criminal investigations by gathering evidence; interviewing victims and witnesses; interrogating suspects.


  • Documents observations and actions by radioing information; completing reports.


  • Fulfills court orders by serving summonses, subpoenas, and arrest warrants.


  • Maintains safe traffic conditions by monitoring and directing traffic; investigating accidents; reporting unsafe streets and facilities.


  • Minimizes personal injury by rescuing and reviving victims; radioing for medical assistance.


  • Ensures back up coverage by assisting other patrol deputies and other law enforcement agencies as needed.


  • Maintains operations by following department policies and procedures; recommending changes.


  • Ensures operation of equipment by practicing and training in its proper use; completing preventative maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; trouble shooting malfunctions; notifying supervisor of needed repairs; evaluating new equipment and techniques.


  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by studying county and local laws and ordinances; attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; practicing skills; participating in professional societies.


  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.


  • Supports the county’s safety and health policies by attending required safety training programs; reporting all accidents, and suspected safety hazards to supervisor.


  • Fulfills job function by participating as an active member in training; participating on county task forces and performing other responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, run, lift, push, pull, bend, and use hands to use a car radio, handgun, shotgun, M16 .223 cal. rifle, impact tools, spike mats, handcuffs, mace, tazer and radar.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Required to operate a motor vehicle. Must be in top physical shape, able to handle violent suspects and able to run in pursuit.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Approximately 85 percent of the work time is spent outdoors in all seasons.

REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR POSITION **:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training Program at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (or waiver) preferred.
  • Two year Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice preferred.
  • Knowledge of criminal laws, juvenile laws, liquor laws and motor vehicle laws.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience and training in law enforcement in the military.
  • Prior employment with another law enforcement agency.
