What are the responsibilities and job description for the KVCC Occupational Therapy Lab Assistant position at Kennebec Valley Community College?
Title: Occupational Therapy Lab Assistant (2 positions available)
Bargaining Unit/Salary Level: $45 per hour
Responsibilities:
1. Provide instruction and facilitate learning experiences that are designed to assist students in gaining the required skills to support entry-level OTA Competency.
2. Provide a forum in which students can experience and gain skills required of them as an OTA student.
3. Engage in weekly supervision/planning meetings with other Lab assistants, Faculty, and Program Director.
4. Maintain attendance of students as well as logging student competency engagement.
5. Assess student for readiness and expected level of competence (based on class objectives) before the final sign off
6. Provide sign-off for a student demonstrating the expected level of skill and knowledge performance
7. Assess student performance in open/competency lab activities to provide OTA Faculty information to best impact student learning needs
8. Check in with OTA faculty weekly to ensure consistency is maintained between course learning lab/theory and open lab
9. Inform OTA faculty re: student issues, learning needs, level of participation and attendance, etc. which may impact students progress
10. Inform OTA faculty regarding lab assistant schedule changes, needs for resources/requests/and assistance.
11. Maintain effective communication with OTA Faculty.
12. Understand lab policies and maintain established lab rules as well as develop specific rules per each lab to maintain safety.
13. Supervise learning lab activities, including interpersonal interactions, and provide necessary feedback to students.
14. Supervise all open/competency lab activities, including interpersonal interactions, and provide necessary feedback to students.
15. Participate in lab practical(s), as contracted or specified.
16. Evaluate students at the end of the semester for lab skills competency through a final lab practical.
17. Maintain safety in the lab at all times and ensure that the OTA lab is clean after each lab.
18. Communicate with the OTA Program Director regarding needed lab supplies.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicant must be credentialed as an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) or Occupational Therapist (OT). This individual must be able to demonstrate competence in the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to support specific course learning, OTS 101 Introduction to Occupational Therapy and Human Occupation, for example: human development, activity analysis, therapeutic use of self, cultural humility, transfers, treatment modalities and interventions commonly associated with various populations treated by occupational practitioners (i.e. physical limitations and psychosocial dysfunctions across the life span), and documentation. Effective oral and written communication skills are required. The applicant must also be knowledgeable about methods for student evaluation.
Location and schedule:
The labs will be offered at York County Community College in Wells, ME, and Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor, ME. A lab assistant will be hired for each location. The Fall 2025 lab schedule for each location five hours per week, the day and the time to be determined. This includes a 1-hour lunch period (1230-130) weekly staff meeting and a 4-hour lab period (2 hours learning lab/2 hours competency lab).
