Job Responsibilities
The Kent County Health Department (KCHD), a nationally accredited department, provides public health services for a population base of more than 660,000, employs approximately 270 employees, and has a nearly $40 million operating budget. The KCHD is located in Grand Rapids, MI, a diverse, thriving community located on the western side of the state, just over 30 miles from Lake Michigan. The community offers unique cultural and recreational activities, exceptional education opportunities, and a quality health care system.
The Medical Director ensures medical practices and services comply with statutory requirements and medical standards of professional practice and ethics. Will work with health professionals to promote practices to prevent disease and disability and to improve the health of individuals and the community. This position is responsible for establishing, implementing, maintaining and amending standard medical procedure and policy. Collaborates with the Administrative Health Officer to develop policies to address public health concerns and advises in matters requiring medical specialty judgments. Prepares and delivers reports to officials and other internal and external constituencies. Engages in public health research and precepting medical residents through the Academic Health Department. Provides leadership support for community collaboratives including the Kent County Opioid Task Force. Reports to the Administrative Health Officer.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited school of medicine, a license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan and board certification in any specialty.
Additionally, requires either : 1) a M.P.H. or an M.S.P.H. degree and not less than two years of full-time public health practice, or 2) not less than three years of full-time public health practice and twenty-four graduate credits acceptable towards a public health degree.
A provisional appointment may be possible if a candidate has not yet acquired the requisite graduate degree and / or public health experience.
Must possess the ability to interact positively with client populations, elected officials, managers, employees, health care and human services practitioners and community representatives from widely diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written.
Additional Information
This position is part of the Management Pay Plan (MPP) and offers a good work life balance. The position is generally 40 hours, M-F, no nights, weekends or holidays. Additionally, the Health Department allows for a flexible schedule and is open to arrangements that allow the candidate to maintain their medical practice.
Please note, this position is an important part of public health emergency response and must be readily available at all times.
The salary is dependent on qualifications and is accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package including a defined benefit pension plan.
