Position Overview:
The Swim Instructor position at Kent County Parks & Recreation requires a dedicated individual with experience in water safety and a passion for teaching. Instructors will be responsible for teaching swim lessons, ensuring the safety of participants, and following structured lesson plans for a variety of age groups. This position requires excellent communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to work with both children and adults in an instructional environment. Candidates must be flexible and available for early morning weekday sessions during July and mid-August, as well as evening lessons in late May to early June. Swim Instructors may also be asked to serve as lifeguards when needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety of all swim lesson participants, providing immediate assistance as needed.
- Administer First Aid and CPR as required in emergency situations.
- Design and follow lesson plans for different age groups, focusing on water safety, swimming techniques, and skill development.
- Supervise and guide assistant instructors, providing support and feedback during lessons.
- Enforce pool rules and safety protocols in accordance with the policy manual and Department of Health guidelines.
- Assist with pool maintenance and safety checks as necessary.
- Demonstrate swimming techniques and actively engage with participants during lessons.
- Maintain a professional and positive environment for both participants and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification or equivalent preferred.
- Current Lifeguard, First Aid & CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification required.
- Previous experience teaching swim lessons and working with the public is preferred.
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
- Must be available for early morning lessons in July to mid-August and evening lessons in late May to early June.
- Must be willing to serve as a lifeguard as needed.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Must meet swimming endurance requirements (minimum 500 meters).
- Ability to climb and actively engage in aquatic activities.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
Pay Rate: $24.00 hourly
