What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Chaplain position at Kent School Corporation?
Position Summary: The Chapel Program has an opening for an Episcopal priest to serve as Associate Chaplain. The Associate Chaplain reports to and supports the Chaplain in tending to the spiritual and pastoral needs of people of all faiths in the community. In addition to teaching and other residential program responsibilities, the Associate Chaplain works collaboratively with the chapel team in planning and leading the four midweek services in St. Joseph's Chapel, and the optional Sunday Holy Eucharist service. A Bachelor’s degree is required. Preference is given to teachers with teaching experience, ideally at the secondary level.
The ideal candidate will be:
- a student-centered educator, skilled in working with teenagers;
- experienced in interfaith settings;
- an ordained Episcopal Priest (or on the ordination track);
- skilled in both preaching and pastoral care;
- eager to work collaboratively with colleagues;
- an effective oral and written communicator;
- committed to developing an equitable and inclusive classroom and community;
- committed to improving their practice through peer observation and professional development; ● dedicated to making positive contributions to the student experience both inside and outside the classroom, including in dorms, on teams and clubs, and through advising.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Assisting the Chaplain in planning chapel services, including collaboration with the music/choral team, and student leadership of Chapel;
- Co-managing student chapel leaders with the Chaplain;
- Assisting in planning of special chapel services, including bringing guest speakers to chapel;
- Training and overseeing student acolytes and readers;
- Preaching approximately 6 times per trimester during Sunday and weekday services;
- Participating in the regular rotation of celebrants for Sunday Holy Communion service;
- Assisting in providing pastoral care to all members of the Kent Community;
- Assisting with confirmation class and mid-week Bible study groups;
- Serving as faculty liaison and mentor to student faith groups, helping them engage their spiritual journey;
- Teaching three academic classes in Religion (or other, based on the applicant’s experience) consistent with the mission, values, and standards established by Kent School;
- Coaching two seasons of interscholastic sports or an equivalent (usually three seasons) of co-curricular activities;
- Performing regular duty in our residential program;
- Participating in Faculty committees;
- Serving as Advisor to 5-7 students; and
- Maintaining Public Passenger Endorsement to drive a school vehicle for school activities.
Additional Requirements:
- Successful completion of post-offer, pre-employment criminal background checks and drug test;
- Maintain punctual and regular attendance;
- Work is performed on a smoke free campus.
