Position Summary:
The Director of Campus Safety will maintain a safe and secure environment for the safety and protection of all students, employees, and visitors by helping to develop, establish and enforce safety and security policies, access control procedures, visitor management protocols, accident prevention efforts, risk management efforts, incident response plans, fire, safety, and emergency management procedures, and parking control and traffic enforcement programs..
As part of maintaining a safe and secure campus, the Director of Campus Safety performs tasks in developing, implementing and managing programs designed to effectively address security and school safety needs. This employee is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive school safety program, which includes working with local law enforcement agencies. This employee works extensively with school administration as well as the broader Kent community on all aspects of school safety and security. Work also involves implementing training programs pertaining to matters of safety and security for campus-based community members. This employee is also responsible for leading a team that will inspect all buildings and various campus areas to ensure proper operation. (i.e. heat working, no water leaks, buildings properly locked, etc.).
The successful candidate will integrate into the community, spending limited time at a desk and lots of time walking the campus and interacting with the entire community, both students and adults. In addition, the successful candidate must have good communication skills, both written and verbal, and must continue and improve Kent’s ongoing commitment to the safety of students, staff and visitors while fostering a creative, warm, caring and effective learning environment.
Kent School Campus Safety focuses on monitoring, reporting, and de-escalating issues. This is not a law enforcement position.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage a team of approximately 8 safety officers, including hiring, supervising, and evaluating.
- Manage various 3rd party vendors who assist with campus safety efforts, including equipment vendors and an outsourced campus safety officer firm.
- Establish a working relationship with local authorities, including the Town of Kent Resident State Trooper, the Town of Kent Emergency Response Manager, and the local volunteer fire department.
- Build and manage the Campus Safety budget, including working within operating budgets to ensure completion of necessary capital improvements.
- Coordinate and ensure school safety compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations by studying existing and new requirements, and overseeing and enforcing school-wide adherence to requirements.
- Acquire a working knowledge of important equipment and ensure this equipment is working appropriately - - fire panels, fire suppression systems, elevators, electronic access control systems, mechanical locks, cameras, visitor management technology, speakers for mass communication, gated entrances, AED machines, first aid kits, emergency phones.
- In partnership with the Director of Technology, ensure the proper operation of all campus safety technologies, including visitor management, electronic access control, cameras, and mass communication.
- Continue to develop and implement policies and procedures that guide safety officers in the performance of their duties and direct all community members as to how they should react in an emergency.
- Coordinate comprehensive school safety and security programs, policies and procedures by studying organizational operations and schedules; establish internal controls; conduct inspections as appropriate; report potential hazards to appropriate departments; update as appropriate Standard Operating Procedures as well as safety and security manuals.
- Develop and implement a Crisis Management / Emergency Response Plan.
- Manage all aspects of student transportation, including:
- Assisting all faculty with their PPE driver’s license certification,
- Training faculty drivers,
- Inspecting all student transportation vehicles,
- Supervising the Kent School mechanic,
- Coordinating / scheduling the use of the Student Transportation Vehicles,
- Maintaining files and complying with all state regulations concerning the transportation of students.
- Work closely with other departments (Admissions, Athletics, Facilities, and Alumni & Development), coordinate and lead all campus safety / security needs pertaining to school meetings, athletic events, other special events, and large programming (Back to School, Family Weekend, Alumni Weekend, Graduation, Reunions, Summer Camps, etc.).
- Lead the School’s Emergency Response Team.
- Serve as a critical advisor to the School’s Infrastructure & Risk Management Committee, assembled to assess details associated with campus operations and risk associated with campus operations.
- Plan and execute all drills & training - - fire drills, shelter-in-place training, lockdown drill. Also, perform table-top exercises as deemed appropriate.
- Coordinate and assist in the training of all employees on first responder skills - - CPR, EpiPen Use, AED use, and other First Aid activities
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree or combination of education and work experience in related fields, preferably in a school setting.
The ideal candidate:
- Has significant experience managing people.
- Has worked in a safety / security role for 10 years.
- Has strong leadership and organizational management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Demonstrate proficiency in understanding technology, and how such technology can be leveraged as a tool to strengthen campus safety processes and procedures.
- Sound judgement, discretion, and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
- Remains calm during emergencies and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Communicates effectively with large audiences, and with a wide range of constituents across the institution (Head of School, CFO / COO, Trustees, Student, Faculty, Vendors)
Requirements:
- Valid CT driver's license. Will obtain the proper certification to drive students.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain these certifications upon hire).
- Properly trained, certified and able to carry a firearm.
Physical Requirements:
- Use strength to lift items needed to perform the functions of the job.
- Capable of walking the campus.
- Can sit and stand for long periods of time and can do so in various weather conditions.
- Visual acuity within normal parameters.
